WESTMINSTER, Md. – Swarthmore won seven events to help defeat McDaniel 57-38 in the Centennial Conference (CC) men's swimming opener for both teams on Saturday.
Jon Hartzel (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) and James Eu (Reston, Va./Hargrave Military Academy) recorded the two-win days for the Green Terror (1-2, 0-1 CC) and were also part of the 200 medley relay that opened the meet with a victory.
Peter Ballen and Tim Brevart led the Garnet (2-0, 1-0 CC) with a pair of triple-win efforts.
Hartzel, Eu, Jesse Mills (Catonsville, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's) and Bryan Nuckles (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) combined to win the 200 medley relay with a Harlow Pool-record time of 1:41.37. The time was also the fourth-best time in program history.
Brevart added a second pool record as part of his three wins, touching first in the 50 free to reset that mark with a time of 21.55 seconds.
Hartzel's individual victory came in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.46, which ranks fourth on the program's all-time list.
Eu notched his individual win in the 500 freestyle, cracking into the all-time top 10 with a time of 1:04.15.
Freshman Stephen Hoyt (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) rounded out McDaniel's winners with a victory in the 200 IM, also breaking into the all-time top 10 in his first home meet with a time of 2:05.59.
Brevert also won the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.87 for Swarthmore. Ballen touched first in the 500 (5:08.57) and 1000 (10:39.40) freestyles for his two individual wins.
The duo partnered with John Flahert and Neil Palmer to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:30.42) and cap three-win days.
Eu and Hartzel finished second (1:53.41) and third (1:55.20), respectively, in the 200 free.
Nuckles placed second in the 50 free (22.23) and 100 free (49.47) while Patrick Rogers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) was second in the 1000 free with a time of 10:45.92.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Gettysburg on Wednesday. Meet time is 7 p.m.
