Free relay record falls in 81-32 win
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Rachel Walega (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) capped her three-win day as the leadoff leg in the 200 freestyle relay, which won in a pool- and program-record time of 1:42.32, capping McDaniel's 81-32 Centennial Conference (CC) women's swimming victory over Bryn Mawr on Saturday.
Emma Duesterhaus (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg Day), Abbie Schickler (Montgomery Village, Md./Covenant Life) and Megan Giroux (Damascus, Md./Damascus) joined Walega on the record-setting relay for the Green Terror (2-4, 2-4 CC), which won 11 of the 14 events on the day.
Meredith Davis led the Owls (3-6, 0-6 CC), touching first in the three shortest events to account for her team's three victories.
Mariel Ramey (Framingham, Mass./Keystone National), Schickler, Brittney Lenz (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and Gaby Cifuentes (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay, combining to finish in a time of 1:58.39.
Davis won the 200 freestyle in a time of 2:06.03 before Duesterhaus touched first in the 100 backstroke (1:02.26).
Walega notched the first of her two individual wins in the 100 breastroke with a pool-record time of 1:08.23 before later touching first in the 200-yard version (2:33.15).
Jessica Fry (St. Mary's, Ga./Camden County) added a two-win day, winning the 200 butterfly (2:33.25) and 400 IM (5:00.00).
Lenz and Cifuentes rounded out a quintet of double winners for McDaniel. Lenz touched first in the 100 butterfly (1:04.23) while Cifuentes was victorious in the 500 free (5:36.76).
Kerrie Vanscoy (Frederick, Md./Tusarora) rounded out individual winners, touching first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:16.62.
In addition to the record in the free relay, Duesterhaus's 100 backstroke and Vanscoy's 200 backstroke rank the duo fourth on the respective all-time performer's list.
The Green Terror returns to action at Washington (Md.) on Saturday. Meet time is 1 p.m.
