Garnet downs McDaniel 55-42 to stay in thick of CC race

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Kathryn Stockbower recorded her 74th career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead Swarthmore to a 55-42 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Tuesday.

Madeline Ross led all scorers with 17 points for the Garnet (9-3, 5-2 CC), who remained one game back in the loss column as part of a four-way conglomerate behind Muhlenberg after Washington knocked off Johns Hopkins.

Whitney Snoops (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led the Green Terror (2-10, 2-7 CC) with nine points and eight rebounds.

Two Ceylan Bodur free throws and a Summer Miller-Walfish 10-footer in the first 1:48 of the game staked Swarthmore to an early 4-0 lead.

Meredith Larsen (Phoenix, Md./Bryn Mawr) sliced the deficit in half 28 seconds later before Stockbower re-established a four-point edge for the visitors on their next possession.

A Cara Thompson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) jumper and Snoops basket evened the game at 6-all.

After Ross and Emma Adams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) exchanged 3-pointers and Stockbower and Snoops traded baskets from short range, Katie Lytle hit a pair of free throws with 11:04 on the clock to spark a 15-4 run that gave Swarthmore its largest lead of the first half.

Trailing 26-15 on a Stockbower layup at the 6:06 mark, Snoops hit the backend of two free throws 30 seconds later to set off a 7-0 stretch that included triples from Kim Acton (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Rachael Rybak (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) to close the deficit to four en route to a 28-22 halftime game.

Bodur and Stockbower pushed the lead back to double digits within the first 1:27 of the second half.

A Snoops jumper at the 13:21 mark made it a 37-28 game before the Garnet tallied the next four points for a 13-point advantage.

Thompson made it a nine-point game once again with a jumper to close the deficit to 47-38 with 6:07 to play but a Brittany Schmelz layup and Ross 3-pointer sealed over the next two minutes sealed the victory.

The Green Terror returns to action at Haverford on Thursday. Game time is 6 p.m.
