Catholic wins back-and-forth battle

Cardinals hand McDaniel fourth straight one-run loss to end season

WESTMINSTER, Md. – L.J. Travaglia went 3-for-5 to pace Catholic in a 7-6 victory over McDaniel in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday.

The Cardinals (21-12) scored three runs in the eighth inning, including the go-ahead tally on a bases-loaded walk, to overcome a 6-4 deficit and win a back-and-forth battle.

Andrew Worm (Easton, Md./Easton) went 3-for-3 in his final game for the Green Terror (9-19), who fell to 3-6 in one-run games that included dropping the final four contests of the season by a single tally.

With his team trailing 6-4, Dan Sullivan was hit by a 3-1 pitch to lead off the eight inning before moving to second on a groundout.

A throwing error put runners at second and third before a second groundout gave McDaniel two outs.

Eamonn Burke dumped a single into right field to plate Sullivan before Travaglia roped a single back through the box to even the game at 6-all.

Dave Grear was hit by a pitch to load the bases before pinch-hitter Mark Kalokitis drew a five-pitch walk to give Catholic the one-run advantage.

With one out in the bottom of the inning, Brandon Kline (Myersville, Md./Middletown) was hit by a pitch before Worm singled for his third hit of the game.

A groundout moved both runners up a base but the Green Terror could not score off Cardinal closer Mike Bzozowski, who faced five batters in the five-out save for his sixth of the year.

A Kline triple and Worm sacrifice fly staked McDaniel to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

A Grear double, groundout and Ross Hunsberger sacrifice fly evened the game in the top of the fourth before a Burke two-run home run in the fifth gave Catholic a 3-1 advantage.

Singles from Chris Zimmerman (Princetown, N.J./Montgomery) and Kyle Pruitt (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) around a Ray Hart (Cheverly, Md./Suitland) walk and balk pulled the hosts within 3-2 before Kline delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Hart and even the game at 3-all.

An error and Troy Langway RBI single put the Cardinals back on top by one in the sixth.

Back-to-back walks to Kline and Worm to lead off the seventh followed by a bunt in which Catholic elected to get the lead runner put runners at first and second with one out in the home seventh.

A Russell Coover (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue Mountain) RBI single pulled the Green Terror back even before Matthew Pace (Baltimore, Md./North County) roped a double to the wall in center field to score Patrick Christopher (Union Beach, N.J./St. John Vianney) and Christopher for the two-run advantage.

Kline finished the day 1-for-2 to give him 47 hits for the year – one shy of Harold Baines, Jr.'s program-record 48 last season. He finished the season with a .405 batting average to become the first player to hit .400 in a single season with at least 65 at bats since 1997 when Jay Hinish hit .417 (30-for-72) and did it with the most at bats (116) of any of the 24 Green Terror players to hit .400 in a season.

Coover, who went 2-for-5 on the day, finished his career with 145 base hits – 13 more than Jerry Resh's (1992-95) previous program record of 132.
