Diplomats score in bottom of seventh, ninth to hand McDaniel
pair of losses
LANCASTER, Pa. – Matt Will had three
hits, including the game-winning single in game two, to lead
Franklin & Marshall to a doubleheader sweep of McDaniel in
Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday.
The Diplomats (14-19-1, 9-9 CC) got an RBI single from
Aaron Gillette to break a 2-all deadlock for a 3-2
win in the bottom of the seventh of game one before overcoming a
3-1 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the ninth for a
4-3 game-two victory.
Matthew Pace (Baltimore, Md./North County)
rapped out four hits to pace the Green Terror (9-18, 5-13 CC), who
gave up final at-bat wins for the third and fourth times this
season.
In game one, doubles from Ricky LaSota (Burtonsville,
Md./Paint Branch), Andrew Worm (Easton,
Md./Easton) and Patrick Christopher (Union Beach,
N.J./St. John Vianney) staked McDaniel to a 2-0 lead in
the top of the third.
A Gillette single, stolen base, error and J.T.
Tritantos sacrifice fly trimmed the deficit in half in the
bottom of the inning before a Jason Anderson
single and Connor Devlin double in the fourth tied
the game.
Devlin led off the home seventh with a double before advancing
to third on a Nick Rolnick single.
The Green Terror issued an intentionally walk to Drew
Atkins to load the bases and set up the force at any base
before Gillette delivered the game-winning hit into left field.
In game two, McDaniel built a 3-0 lead over the first six
innings.
A Sergio Nieto (Mamoraneck, N.Y./Rye Neck)
double and Ray Hart (Cheverly, Md./Suitland)
sacrifice fly gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the second.
Nieto roped a one-out triple in the fourth before scoring on a
Pace single to double the advantage.
Nieto walked to lead off the sixth and scored on a Kyle Pruitt (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) single.
A Gillette walk and back-to-back singles from Tritantos and Will
pulled the Diplomats within 3-1 in the eighth.
Rolnick led off the ninth with an infield single before a Devlin
single put runners at first and second.
A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base and a Blue
Wells pinch-hit double cleared the bases to tie the
game.
Two walks reloaded the bases before Will delivered the hit that
completed the sweep.
The Green Terror concludes the season at home against Catholic
on Wednesday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
