Bullets hold McDaniel to two hits in six-inning victory
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Matt Karis pitched six
innings of two-hit shutout ball and went 1-for-3 with an RBI and
run scored at the plate to lead Gettysburg in a 7-0
weather-shortened Centennial Conference (CC) baseball victory over
McDaniel on Friday.
Called after six innings due to lightning delays, heavy rain
moving in and darkness, the Bullets (13-15, 5-9 CC) made the most
of their first three at-bats to complete the season sweep.
Patrick Christopher (Union Beach, N.J./St. John
Vianney) and Matthew Pace (Baltimore, Md./North
County) notched a hit apiece for the Green Terror (7-15,
3-11 CC), who scored just one run in 15 innings in the two-game
series.
A Kevin Langhauser triple to the fence in right
field followed by a Cam Riera bouncing-ball single
through the left side staked Gettysburg to a 1-0 lead in the first
inning.
After a 1-hour, 15-minute weather delay in the top of the
second, McDaniel went down in order before Chris
Simard led off the inning with a triple to the gap in
right-center and scored on a Eric Williams
sacrifice fly to double the advantage.
A pair of home runs coupled with a Williams RBI double in the
third stretched the lead to 6-0. Riera blasted a two-run shot over
the right-field wall before Karis followed two batters later with a
solo home run to straightaway center.
Mike Backus led off the home fifth with a
double before advancing to second on a long fly out and scoring on
a Craig Barrows sacrifice fly to set the final
margin.
Upon conclusion of the sixth inning, lightning was once again
spotted and rain began to fall. The umpires sent the teams to the
dugouts. After a 25-minute delay, another flash was spotted,
forcing the game to be called and deemed final at that point.
The Green Terror returns to action in a doubleheader at home
against Ursinus on Saturday. The first game begins at 12:30
p.m.
