Green Terror racks up 18-12 win over Washington
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Brittany Baer (Manchester,
Md./Westminster) scored six goals, breaking the all-time
career goal scoring record in the process of McDaniel's 18-12
Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse victory over Washington
(Md.) on Tuesday.
The Green Terror (8-5, 2-4 CC) raced out to a 9-1 lead with
13:28 to play in the first half. Baer tallied four times during the
opening run, breaking Sandi Stevens' 21-year old record 10 minutes,
16 seconds into the senior's 47th collegiate game.
With just 4:14 elapsed, Baer took a dump pass from Sarah Mintz
(Medfield, Mass./Medfield) over the top of the goal and
quick-sticked home her 178th tally to tie Stevens on the all-time
list.
The tie lasted 6 minutes, 2 seconds. After the Shorewomen (6-5,
2-4 CC) pulled within 3-1, Baer won the ensuing draw control
– one of her five on the day and one of her
already-program-record 161 – streaked down the right side of
the field and blasted home the record goal.
A Paige
Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) draw control
win-and-goal stretched the lead to 5-1 just 15 seconds later before
back-to-back Mintz-to-Baer goals made it 7-1.
A Brittany Lines
(Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) solo marker and assist to Mintz
pushed the lead to 9-1.
Corinne Ziccardi converted a free-position goal
36 seconds later to start a four-goal flurry over the next 10:01 to
pull Washington within 9-5.
Mintz once again found Baer 2 minutes, 13 seconds before the
half ended – the fourth time the duo hooked up for goals
– to stretch the lead to 10-5 at the break.
After Mollie Shipley made it 10-6 just 46
seconds into the second half, Mintz tallied her third goal of the
day for her career-best seventh point of the afternoon with 23:39
to play, starting a three-goal stretch over just a 1-minute,
27-second span.
Holding a 13-8 advantage with 18:07 to play, Lines converted her
third goal of the day to spark another 5-0 burst in which five
different Green Terror players scored to push to lead to 18-8 with
10:46 showing.
The Shorewomen scored the final four goals of the game to set
the final margin.
Kalli Parrish joined Shipley with three goals
to lead Washington, which got two goals and two assists from
Sam Ohrem.
Messersmith controlled six draws, picked up three ground balls
and caused three turnovers for McDaniel, which pulled to within two
games of the fifth and final playoff spot with three games
remaining.
The Green Terror finished with a 45-27 advantage in shots,
including by a 29-9 margin in the decisive first half.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Haverford on
Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
