Mules tally twice in final minute to force overtime, down

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Amanda McGovern tallied
four goals and added two assist, including with 29 seconds
remaining in regulation to tie the game at 13-all, to lead
Muhlenberg to a 14-13 victory over McDaniel in Centennial
Conference (CC) women's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) and
Chelsea Watkins (Columbia, Md./Hammond) each
scored three goals to lead the Green Terror (7-5, 1-4 CC), who fell
two games out of the fifth and final playoff spot with four
conference games to play.
Trailing 13-10 with four minute to play in regulation, the Mules
(7-4, 2-3 CC) tallied the final four goals of the contest to move
to within one game of a playoff spot.
After back-to-back tallies from Watkins 3:09 apart gave the
visitors a three-goal advantage with 7:29 to play, McGovern drew
Muhlenberg with two with 3:32 on the clock.
A Lauren DeCarle unassisted tally with one
minute showing made it a one-goal game before McGovern finished a
solo run 31 seconds later to force the 6-minute extra session.
Danielle Scarrone finished a pass from McGovern
26 seconds into the period and Allisyn Vachon made
two of her 18 saves over the final 5:34 of the session for the
win.
Two goals from Brittany Lines (Pasadena,
Md./Chesapeake) gave McDaniel a 2-0 lead just 1:54 into
the game before McGovern got the Mules on the board with an
unassisted tally at the 4:59 mark.
Goals from Messersmith and Alison Rose (Jessup,
Md./Hammond) stretched the lead to 4-1 midway through the
period before all three of Danielle Rosen's
goals keyed a five-goal flurry over the final 12:34 of the half to
take a 6-4 advantage into the break.
McGovern capped the 6-0 burst 26 seconds into the second half
before Lisa Jurd (Columbia, Md./Hammond) and
Messersmith made it a one-goal game just 2:10 later.
After Alyssa Bascelli pushed the lead back to
two, Anna Beaudry (Amherst, Mass./Amherst
Regional) and Stephanie Serbun (Abington,
Pa./Abington) evened the game at 8-all with 17:20 to
play.
Tallies from Bascelli and Kelsey Elmer
reestablished a two-goal edge for the Mules but Walkins sparked a
five-goal burst with a free-position goal at the 46:35 mark.
Messersmith added an 8-meter goal a minute later before
Brittany Baer (Manchester, Md./Westminster)
tallied her 38th goal of the season and the 177th of her collegiate
career with 11:53 to play to give her team a one-goal edge and
leave the senior one goal shy of tying Sandi Steven's
all-time goal scoring record.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Washington (Md.) on
Tuesday. Game time is 4 p.m.
