Green Terror tallies late to take game one before Mules forge
split in error-filled nightcap
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Patrick Christopher (Union
Beach, N.J./St. John Vianney) went a combined 5-for-8 with
five RBIs to lead McDaniel in a split with Muhlenberg in Centennial
Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday.
The Green Terror (7-13, 3-9 CC) plated six runs in the fifth
inning of game one, including a Christopher grand slam, to win 8-1
before the Mules (12-14, 6-6 CC) took advantage of five McDaniel
errors to score seven unearned runs in a 10-6 nightcap victory.
Joseph DiCecilia rapped out three hits in the
game two win for Muhlenberg, which got a complete-game win from
Jason Daniels.
Zach Jones (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) twirled a
three-hit gem, fanning seven in a complete-game win in the
opener.
A Jeff Puklin walk and Eric
Pomroy RBI double staked the Mules to a 1-0 lead in the
third inning of game one before a Ray Hart (Cheverly,
Md./Suitland) double, sacrifice and Andrew Worm
(Easton, Md./Easton) RBI single evened the game in the
bottom of the frame.
Matthew Pace (Baltimore, Md./North County) led
off the home fifth with a single up the middle before a fielding
error put runners at first and second.
An interference call on a sacrifice attempt accounted the first
out before a walk loaded the bases.
Worm singled through the left side to plate Pace for a 2-1
lead.
With two outs, Russell Coover (Schuylkill Haven,
Pa./Blue Mountain) was hit by a pitch to force home Hart
before Christopher belted an 0-2 breaking ball inside the
right-field foul pole for his first collegiate grand slam and a 7-1
lead.
Singles from Jimmy Najera (Fort Washington,
Md./DeMatha) and Pace coupled with a Hart walk reloaded
the bases before a lineout prevented any more damage.
A Kyle Pruitt (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur)
double and Coover sacrifice fly set the final margin in the
sixth.
With no score and one out in the third inning of game two,
Puklin reached on an error before a Dan Fisher
single and Joseph Vila walk loaded the bases.
A groundout allowed Puklin to score before singles from
DiCecilia and John Muha staked Muhlenberg to a 4-0
lead.
Two errors an attempt to turn a double play keyed a three-run
inning that pulled the hits with 4-3.
Singles from Jesse Nusbaum and Eli
Branzburg coupled with a fielder's choice bunt
stretched the lead to 5-3 in the fourth before a Hart sacrifice fly
made it 5-4 in the bottom of the frame.
A pair of errors and a two-run single from Brian
Beck pushed the lead to 7-4 in the fifth.
The teams exchanged runs in the seventh before back-to-back
doubles from Beck and Branzburg and a Puklin single stretched the
Muhlenberg advantage to 10-5.
A Christopher triple and Coover single set the final margin in
the bottom of the ninth.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Gettysburg on
Tuesday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
