Stevenson edges McDaniel in ninth

Green Terror gives up two in bottom of ninth in season opener

ABERDEEN, Md. - Ryan Baione notched a pair of hits, including the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth to lead Stevenson to a 5-4 victory over McDaniel in non-conference baseball action on Monday.

The Green Terror (0-1), opening its season after having the first week of the season cancelled due to poor field conditions, got a 2-for-3 performance from Sergio Nieto (Mameroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck).

Trailing 4-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, the Mustangs (7-1) received a leadoff single from Steve Krider. An error on a sacrifice attempt from Heath Johnson put the winning run on base.

After Joe Robak successfully executed the sacrifice, the winning run moved into scoring position for Baione, who singled down the left-field line for the victory.

Kyle Pruitt (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) and Matthew Pace (Baltimore, Md./North County) drew walks to put runners at the corners with one one in the top of the fourth.

After a wild pitch, plated Pruitt and moved Pace to second, Nieto doubled down the left-field line to stake McDaniel to a 2-0 lead.

Singles from Baione and Jeff Bihy coupled with a fielding error trimmed the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame before a Russell Coover (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue Mountain) RBI single plated Brandon Kline (Myersville, Md./Middletown) to push the lead back to two in the fifth.

Three straight singles from the bottom of the lineup, a passed ball and RBI groundout evened in the game in the bottom of the seventh before McDaniel once again took the lead in the top of the ninth.

Pruitt drew a one-out walk before scoring on a Coover RBI single.

The Green Terror, who had its scheduled home games for Tuesday and Wednesday cancelled, returns to action on their first day of its spring training trip to Winter Haven, Fla. McDaniel opens the eight-game trip with a doubleheader against Fitchburg State on Saturday. The first game of the twinbill starts at 3 p.m.
