Green Terror tallies seven straight to down St. Mary's
WESTMINSTER, Md. - Brittany Baer (Manchester,
Md./Westminster) recorded five goals for the second
straight game to lead McDaniel to an 12-10 victory over St. Mary's
(Md.) in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Trailing 6-2 with 8:08 to play in the first half, the Green
Terror (3-0) reeled off the final two goals of the first half and
first five of the second half to take a 9-6 lead en route to its
third straight victory to open the season.
Nora Fallon-Oben led the Seahawks (0-3) with
four goals.
After Aubrey Mirkin staked St. Mary's to a
four-goal lead, McDaniel called a timeout. With 6:37 to play in the
opening half, Chelsea Watkins (Columbia,
Md./Hammond) converted a free-position shot to spark the
seven-goal rally.
Brittany Lines (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake)
trimmed the deficit to two at halftime before Baer tallied three
straight in a 2-minute, 15-second span to give the hosts the lead
for the first time since Baer staked her team to a 1-0 lead 4:12
into the game.
Two straight tallies from Paige Messersmith (Phoenix,
Md./Dulaney) pushed the advantage to three at the 29:24
mark.
Fallon-Oben and Lauriann Parker pulled the
Seahawks within one nearly three minutes later before Baer finished
a solo run with 12:43 to play to stretch the lead back to two.
A Kelsey Branch free-position shot 47 seconds
later made it a 10-9 game but Watkins and Anna Beaudry
(Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) each had unassisted
goals to make it a 12-9 game with 3:12 to play.
Fallon-Oben set the final margin 25 seconds later.
After Baer's opening tally, Parker had the assist on an
Erin Shackelford goal and then found the back of
the net herself for a 2-1 lead at the 8:05 mark.
Erin Hopkins (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) momentarily
tied the game before back-to-back Fallon-Obnen goals sparked a 4-0
burst.
Watkins picked up six ground balls and had two draw controls and
a caused turnover in addition to her two-goal game.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Stevenson on Tuesday.
Game time is 4 p.m.
