Green Terror blanks Dickinson behind 11 strikeouts from
freshman pitcher
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Freshman Zach Jones (Frederick,
Md./Tuscarora) struck out 11 batters in seven innings to
lead McDaniel to a 4-0 victory over Dickinson in Centennial
Conference (CC) baseball action on Sunday.
The rookie keyed a shutout for the Green Terror (5-7, 1-3 CC) to
snap the team's four-game skid with the most strikeouts by a
McDaniel pitcher since Jimmy Dahlgren fanned 12 Swarthmore batters
on Apr. 9, 2006.
Brandon Kline (Myersville, Md./Middletown) and
Patrick Christopher (Union Beach, N.J./St. John
Vianney) each added three-hit performances and scored all
four runs for McDaniel.
Matt Tuneski led the Red Devils (4-13, 1-3 CC)
with a 2-for-4 performance.
In the bottom of the third in a scoreless game, Kline led off
the inning with a single before scoring on a Christopher triple to
right field.
Christopher came home to score on a Russell Coover
(Schuyklill Haven, Pa./Blue Mountain) RBI groundout.
Two innings later, Kline once again led off with a single before
Christopher went deep for his first collegiate home run.
Jones threw the first seven innings, scattering five hits and
walking three in addition to his 11 strikeouts. Gio
Fricchione (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern) allowed one hit
and struck out one in the final two innings.
McDaniel returns to action at No. 30 Johns Hopkins on Wednesday.
Game time is 3:30 p.m.
