Garnet plates 27 runs in doubleheader sweep
SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Miles Santo went
5-for-6 with two RBIs and five runs scored to lead Swarthmore to a
doubleheader sweep of McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC)
baseball action on Saturday.
The Garnet (11-6, 3-0 CC) opened up a big led midway through the
opener en route to a 16-5 win before tallying six in the fifth
inning of game two to break open a 2-1 game and win, 11-6.
Brandon Kline (Myersville, Md./Middletown)
added a three-hit, two-RBI, two-run performance in the nightcap for
the Green Terror (4-7, 0-3 CC), who dropped its fourth straight
game.
An RBI single from Ben Schneiderman and
Mike Waterhouse sacrifice fly in the bottom of the
second of game one led to two Garnet runs and jumpstarted a 12-run
stretch over the next three innings.
Back-to-back walks and a hit batsman to lead off the third led
to five runs, stretching the lead to 7-0.
A Ricky LaSota (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch)
RBI single plated Chris Longo (Monroe,
N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) in the top of the fourth but a
two-out error in the bottom of the frame before a Waterhouse
two-run double opened the gates for five more runs for a 12-1 lead.
The Green Terror pulled within 12-5 with a pair of two-run
innings before Jimmy Gill roped a two-run single
to center to key a four-run sixth that set the final margin.
Russell Coover (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue
Mountain) used a sacrifice fly to plate Kline, staking
McDaniel to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in game two.
A leadoff walk to Mike Waterhouse and a pair of
wild pitches evened the game at 1-all.
Spencer Ross scored on a third Green Terror
wild pitch in the fourth inning for a 2-1 lead before a
Rory McTear two-run single capped a six-run fifth
to open up an 8-1 Garnet advantage.
Swarthmore extended the lead to 12-1 before a Kline solo home
run in the eighth and a four-run ninth inning set the final margin.
The Green Terror returns to action in the home opener against
Dickinson on Sunday. Game time is 2 p.m.
