Green Terror uses 10-2 run to down Elizabethtown
ELIZABETHTOWNR, Pa. – Brittany Baer (Manchester,
Md./Westminster) matched her career highs with seven goals
and eight points to lead McDaniel to a 16-15 victory over
Elizabethtown in non-conference women's lacrosse action on
Saturday.
Lisa Jurd (Columbia, Md./Hammond) added three
goals for the Green Terror (5-1), scoring three straight as part of
a 6-0 burst that spanned both halves to help her team overcome a
10-4 deficit and even the game.
Megan Byrnes led the Blue Jays (3-3) with five
goals while Sarah Cullinan added four goals and
two assists.
Trailing 10-4 on back-to-back Byrnes markers, Baer sparked a
10-2 stretch with 8:41 to play in the first half with a
free-position goal.
Just 1:24 later, Paige Messersmith (Phoenix,
Md./Dulaney) added the second of McDaniel's four
free-position tallies before Jurd finished a pair of solo runs to
trim the deficit to 10-8 at the intermission.
Jurd completed her natural hat trick 50 seconds into the second
half before Chelsea Watkins (Columbia,
Md./Hammond) tallied on an eight-meter shot with 25:12
showing to even the game.
Kara Solesky momentarily put the hosts back on
top but Baer responded off a Brittany Lines (Pasadena,
Md./Chesapeake) assist to even the game once again.
Cullinan gave Elizabethtown a 12-11 lead at the 39:43 mark
before three straight Baer goals gave the Green Terror a 14-12
advantage and capped the rally.
Stephanie Kries scored unassisted and then
found Cullinan to even the game for the final time with 8:25 to
play.
Just 10 seconds later, Baer notched her lone assist of the day,
finding Kelly Scheler (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton
Wright) for a one-goal advantage.
Baer added an insurance goal with 4:10 on the clock before
Byrnes tallied with 1:49 to play.
McDaniel held the Blue Jays off the board in the waning seconds
for its fourth straight one-goal win in the series.
Cullinan and Samantha Redles staked
Elizabethtown to a 2-0 lead in the game's first 1:28 before
Lines and Baer evened the game just over three minutes later.
Redles and Katie Caprinolo stretched the Blue
Jay lead back to two just 6:25 into the game before Anna
Beaudry (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) and Scheler
sandwiched a Byrnes tally to make it a 5-4 game 47 seconds later.
Byrnes keyed a five-goal flurry with three markers in a
7-minute, 16-second span to open up a six-goal edge for the hosts.
Baer added a program-record 10 draw controls in the win for
McDaniel, which finished with a 24-9 advantage at the center circle
– a total which tied the Green Terror team record for draw
controls in a game.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Catholic on
Thursday. Game time is 4 p.m.
