Gomez notches pair of top-8 finishes to lead Green Terror
LANCASTER, Pa. - Stephen Gomez (Charlottesville,
Va./Albermarle) finished seventh in the 200 butterfly to
lead McDaniel at the 2010 Centennial Conference (CC) men's swimming
championship hosted by Franklin & Marshall on Friday through
Sunday.
Gomez, who recorded the fourth-fastest time in the morning
prelims, finished seventh in the finals with a time of 1:59.82.
He also added top-16 finishes in both individual medley races.
He was ninth overall, finishing first in the B-finals of the 400 IM
with a season-best time of 4:19.10. He was eighth fastest on time,
swimming faster in the finals than the eighth-place finisher but
missed the A-finals by 0.67 seconds in the morning prelims.
Gomez was 15th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.35.
As a team, the Green Terror placed seventh, finshing the
three-day event with 190 points. Franklin & Marshall won its
sixth consecutive title with 848 points. Swarthmore finished second
(732) while Gettysburg was third (520).
Morgan DeHart (Salisbury, Md./Wicimico) added a
13th-place showing in the 400 IM with a time of 4:31.86. He
finished 14th in both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes with times of
1:04.29 and 2:22.67, respectively.
Jono Leafblad (Garnee, Ill./Warren Twp.)
finished 10th in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:04.43 - second
in the B-Cut finals. Leafblad was eighth on time but missed the
A-Cut finals by nearly three seconds in the morning prelims.
Leafblad added a 13th-place showing in the 100 breaststroke
(1:03.92).
Jason Harder (Philadelphia, Pa./Pennington) was
12th in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:07.11.
Chris Steinheimer (Monrovia, Md./Urbana)
finished 15th in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 18:07.32.
Bryan Nuckles (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk
Academy) finished 16th in the 50 freestyle with a time of
22.67.
Gomez, DeHart and Nuckles teamed with Wes Henry
(Greencastle, Pa./Perkiomen) for a sixth-place showing in
the 800 free relay (7:28.63).
Nuckles, Leaflad and Henry were also part of both medley relays
teams that swam season-best times. DeHart joined the trio on the
200 medley relay that finished seventh in a time of 1:44.09 while
Gomez joined the initial trio in the 400-yard version that also
placed seventh (3:48.55).
