Box Score Moreland drops 24 to key fifth straight Green Terror win and
64-55 victory at Johns Hopkins
BALTIMORE, Md. - Ali Moreland (Davidsonville, Md./Lower
Moreland) matched her career high with 24 points and six
steals to lead McDaniel to a 64-55 victory over Johns Hopkins in
Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Monday.
Sally Grace (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales
Academy) added 10 points for the Green Terror (5-4, 4-2
CC), who recorded the largest margin of victory in the series with
the Blue Jays (4-5, 2-3 CC) since a 74-56 win in Westminster on
Feb. 7, 2006.
Britni Lonesome paced Johns Hopkins with 11
points.
With the game knotted at 16-all, Emma Adams (Oneida,
N.Y./Oneida) hit a bucket in the lane to give McDaniel its
first lead of the game with 5:00 showing.
After Monica Mitchell momentarily tied the game
again off a missed free throw at the 4:35 mark, four Moreland
points sparked an 8-0 run that gave the Green Terror a 26-18 lead
before a Siobhan Callanan jumper snapped a
2-minute, 48-second scoring drought.
Moreland drained a triple from the top of the key just before
the first-half clock expired to gave the visitors a 33-20 lead at
the intermission, capping a 25-6 stretch over the final 11:05 of
the half.
Cara Thompson (Hagerstown, Md./North
Hagerstown) hit a 15-footer on the Green Terror's first
possession of the second half to stretch the lead to 15.
Johns Hopkins closed to within 10 but Grace canned 3-pointers
from each corner to stretch the lead to 45-29 with 13:45 to play.
A Britni Lonesome triple from the left wing
with 4:15 to play capped an 8-0 Blue Jay burst to close the deficit
to 55-47.
Whitney Snoops (Millersville, Md./Archbishop
Spalding) responded with an elbow jumper 27 seconds later
to snap the spurt.
Lyndsay Burton hit a layup to once again make
it a five-point game but Katelyn Fischer (Reisterstown,
Md./Seton Keough) converted a trey to stretch the lead to
eight with 2:58 to play.
After Thompson hit the first of two free throws with 1:07 to
play that stretched the lead to 61-52, Katie
Biggart drained a 3-pointer with 53.3 seconds on the clock
to make it a two-possession game.
One Fischer free throw with 50.5 seconds on the clock and and
two more with 39.3 seconds showing set the final margin.
With the game knotted at 4-all just 3:15 into the game, Johns
Hopkins scored 10 of the game's next 14 points to take a six-point
lead at the 11:48 mark behind four points from Nia
Josiah.
With 11:05 to play in the first half, Moreland hit an eight-foot
jumper directly off a Grace inbounds pass in the left corner to
spark a 6-0 run to even the game 2 minutes, 21 seconds later.
Thompson and Lyles led the way on the boards with nine and eight
rebounds, respectively. Fischer added a career-high six steals to
go with her eight points for McDaniel, which finished with 17
steals.
The Green Terror returns to action at Washington (Md.) on
Wednesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
