WESTMINSTER, Md. – Jon Zimmerman (Lemoyne,
Pa./Cedar Cliff) notched four hits and drew three walks to
lead McDaniel to a doubleheader sweep of Swarthmore in Centennial
Conference (CC) baseball action on Sunday.
The Green Terror (11-7, 4-3 CC) took the opener 8-4 before building
an early lead in game two and holding on for an 11-8
victory.
In the nightcap, Zimmerman drew three walks from his leadoff
position to tie the career mark for walks with 62 bases on balls.
Mike Waterhouse led the Garnet (8-16, 0-8 CC) with
three hits and three runs scored.
Trailing 3-0 heading to the bottom of the third in game one,
Zach Croft (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) reached on an
error to begin a nine-batter, four-run inning.
A failed pickoff attempt allowed Croft to move to
second.
Sergio Nieto (Mameroneck, Md./Rye Neck) singled
through the left side to put runners at the corners before a
Zimmerman triple to the gap in right-center cleared the bases and
drew McDaniel within 3-2.
Justin Reitz (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) drew a walk
before a one-out error allowed Zimmerman to score and tie the
game.
A two-out single from Troy Tipton (Hanover, Pa./South
Western) played Reitz to give the Green Terror a one-run
lead.
Harold Baines, Jr. (St. Michaels, Md./St.
Michaels) singled home Nieto, who was hit by a pitch to
reach base, in the fourth before a Matthew Pace (Baltimore,
Md./North County) double and Nieto RBI groundout stretched
the lead to 6-3 in the fifth.
A Baines walk, Russell Coover (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue
Mountain), sacrifice and Andrew Worm (Easton,
Md./Easton) singled accounted for two more runs in the
home sixth.
A Waterhouse single a Wiley Archibald double in
the top of the seventh set the final margin.
A hit batter, two walks, an error, a balk and groundout accounted
for two Swarthmore runs in the top of the second without the aide
of a base hit.
Matt Lamb drew a walk to lead off the third before
scoring on a Jimmy Gill single in the third to
open the three-run lead.
In game two, a two-run single from Coover played Zimmerman and
Baines in the first.
Four walks and four singles in the home third accounted for five
runs to stretch the lead to 7-0.
Worm keyed the inning with a two-run single.
An error and singles from Conor Casey and
Miles Santo in the fourth pulled the visitors
within 7-4 before an error on a sacrifice bunt and squeeze play
trimmed the deficit to one in the fifth.
Joe Drzonsc (Albany, N.Y./Notre Dame Bishop
Gibbons), on in relief of starter Chase Wolf
(Middletown, Md./Middletown) after the first two batters
of the fifth reached, retired eight of the 12 batters he faced in
three innings to keep it a one-run game and improve to
3-0.
After Danny Snight (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's
College Prep) needed just five pitches for a 1-2-3 top of
the eighth, the Green Terror took advantage of a one-out error to
plate four insurance runs.
A Pace two-run double coupled with RBI singles from Baines and
Tipton keyed the frame.
An Anthony Montalbano two-run home run in the top
of the ninth set the final margin.
Snight picked up his second save of the season in game
two.
Tyler Persun (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) went the
distance in the opener to improve to 3-2.
Baines, Coover and Tipton all recorded three hits in the twinbill.
Tipton added four RBIs.
The Green Terror returns to action at Johns Hopkins on Monday. Game
time is 3:30 p.m.
