BALTIMORE, Md. – Ryan Biner recorded
three hits and six RBIs to lead Johns Hopkins to a 26-10 victory
over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on
Friday.
The Blue Jays (19-13, 11-5 CC) plated 11 runs in the bottom of the
first inning, capped by Biner's three-run home run, en route
to scoring the most runs the Green Terror (15-13, 7-9 CC) has
allowed since a 28-5 loss to Salisbury on Apr. 11, 1977. The win
also secured the fourth and final CC playoff spot for Johns
Hopkins, eliminating McDaniel in the process.
Harold Baines, Jr. (St. Michaels, Md./St.
Michaels) rapped out three hits for the Green Terror,
breaking the program record for hits in a season with 46. Rick
Estes (1997) and Jerry Resh (1995) shared the old mark of
45.
With one out and runners at first and second, Biner cracked a
doubled to clear the bases and start the big inning.
A walk, error and passed ball followed by a sacrifice fly opened
the flood gates for eight unearned runs.
After a two-run single from Todd Emr, Biner
blasted his second extra-base hit of the inning, clearing the fence
in right-center to give the hosts an 11-0 lead.
The Blue Jays stretched the lead to 18-0 after four innings before
the Green Terror put together a seven-run fifth.
With two on and two out, Jon Zimmerman (Lemoyne, Pa./Cedar
Cliff) roped a single down the right-field line to plate
the Green Terror's first two runs of the game.
After Justin Reitz (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) was hit
by a pitch, Baines followed with his record-breaking hit – an
RBI double to left-center.
Russell Coover (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue
Mountain) was hit by a pitch to load the bases before
Troy Tipton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) recorded
four of his five RBIs with one swing, clearing the right-field
fence for a grand slam.
Two runs in the top of the seventh pulled McDaniel within 18-9
before a single run in the bottom of the frame and a seven-run
eighth keyed by a Steve Bejsiuk pinch-hit,
three-run homer.
Brandon Kline (Myersville, Md./Middletown) had a
pinch-hit solo shot to lead off the ninth, setting the final
margin.
The Green Terror concludes the season with a doubleheader at home
against Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. The first game begins
at 12:30 p.m.
