CARLISLE, Pa. – Abby Larson netted seven
goals, including three straight to end the first half, to lift
Dickinson to a 19-11 victory over McDaniel in the first round of
the 2009 Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse
tournament on Wednesday.
Clinging to an 8-7 lead with 1:38 remaining in the first half,
Larson reeled off three goals in a 50-second span to spark a 9-1
run that gave the fourth-seeded Red Devils (11-6) a 17-8 lead with
11:35 remaining in the contest. With the victory, Dickinson
advances to Saturday's semifinal against top-seeded and No.
2-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.
Brittany Baer (Westminster, Md./Westminster)
recorded four goals for the Green Terror (9-8), who fell for the
first time in four CC first-round games. Baer completed her
record-setting season with 76 goals and has tied the conference
record by netting at least one goal in the last 29
contests.
After Larson stretched the lead to four at the intermission,
Kelsey Muir picked up where she left off, scoring
1:57 into the second half.
Lexie Kob pushed the lead to 13-7 a minute later
before Kelly Scheler (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton
Wright) broke up the stretch with 21:58 to
play.
Four straight free-position goals by four different players over a
9-minute, 20-second span capped the game-clinching
run.
Seniors Chelsea Ferruzzi (Jenkintown,
Pa./Jenkintown), Jennifer Stone (Baltimore,
Md./Loch Raven) and Lindsey McDonald (Germantown,
Md./Damascus) each scored to pull the visitors within
17-11 with 5:50 to play but Kob and Sunnie Ko
rounded out the scoring to set the final margin.
Lucy West and Larson staked Dickinson to a 2-0
lead 4:01 into the contest before Stone tallied twice around a Baer
marker to give the No. 5 seed a 3-2 lead at the 21:15
mark.
Muir and Alysa Crellin turned the one-goal deficit
into a one-goal lead 46 seconds later but unassisted tallies from
Baer and Ferruzzi 30 seconds apart reestablished the McDaniel edge
with 18:14 showing in the first half.
Two Larson tallies and a Muir goal made it 7-5 with 13:26 to play
before Baer scored two of the next three to pull the visitors back
within one.
