ANNVILLE, Pa. – Brent Toms (Hagerstown, Md./North
Hagerstown) used some heads-up base running to score from
second base on a deep fly ball to right field in the top of the
eighth inning, breaking a 5-all deadlock and giving McDaniel a 6-5
victory at Lebanon Valley in non-conference baseball action on
Wednesday.
With the win, the Green Terror (15-12) assures itself of at least a
.500 record – the program's first since a 17-12
campaign in 2004.
Jon Zimmerman (Lemoyne, Pa./Cedar Cliff) set a
third program record in the victory, scoring two runs – the
90th and 91st of her career to overtake
Christian Abildso (1995-98). He already owns the career marks for
at bats (432) and walks (66). With three games remaining in his
career, he also needs just nine hits to tie Jerry Resh's
career mark of 132. Justin Reitz (Halifax,
Pa./Halifax) is third on the all-time hits list with
118.
Grant Wilest and Joe Soupik led
the Flying Dutchmen (18-16-1) on Wednesday with a 2-for-4
performances.
Trailing 5-4 after a Dustin Deibert double plated
Brent Ruminski in the bottom of the sixth, Reitz
singled to right field to lead off the visitor
seventh.
A single from Harold Baines, Jr. (St. Michael's,
Md./St. Michaels) – his 43rd of base
knock of the season, which is two shy of the program record –
and wild pitch put runners at second and third.
Russell Coover (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue
Mountain) drew a walk to load the bases before
Troy Tipton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) drove in
Reitz to even the game at 5-all.
An inning later, Toms reached on an error before moving to second
on a Sergio Nieto (Mameroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck)
sacrifice bunt.
Zach Croft (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) followed with a
fly ball to the warning track in right field for an out, but
heads-up base running from Toms turned the play into a the
game-winning run.
An error and Coover RBI single in the top of the first staked
McDaniel to an early 1-0 lead before four straight one-out hits
plated two runs in the bottom of the inning to give Lebanon Valley
a 2-1 edge.
Zimmerman walked to lead off the third before tying the game and
scoring his program-record run on a Baines double two batters
later.
The Flying Dutchmen countered with singles runs in the each of the
next two innings before the Green Terror plated single runs in each
of the next four.
In the fifth, Baines drew a bases-loaded walk to force home Nieto
to make it a 4-3 game before Andrew Worm (Easton,
Md./Easton) drew a walk to lead off the top of the
sixth.
A hit batter put runners ant first and second before Nieto roped a
double to the gap in right-center to score Worm and even the game
at 4-all.
The Green Terror returns to action at Johns Hopkins on Friday. Game
time is 3:30 p.m.
