COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Brent Umstead
recorded four hits, including the game-winner in the bottom of the
11th of game to two, giving Ursinus a doubleheader sweep
of McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on
Saturday.
The Bears (20-8-1, 11-3 CC) scored seven runs in the bottom of the
fifth in game one to break a 4-all deadlock and win 11-4 before
completing the sweep with an 8-7 victory in the nightcap.
Justin Reitz (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) paced the
Green Terror (14-10, 7-6 CC) with four hits – one of four
McDaniel players with four knocks in the twinbill.
Trailing 7-5 with one out in the bottom of the 10th,
Ben Lockman drew a walk before David
Randolph was hit by a pitch two batters later to put
runners at the corners with two outs.
An error allowed Lockman to score before Tommy
Clarke drove in pinch-runner Ben Gresh to
knot the game at 7-all.
Ryan Schmidt drew a leadoff walk in the
11th inning before a bunt single from Stephen
Benavage and sacrifice bunt put runners at second and
third with one out.
After an intentional walk to Lockman to load the bases, Umstead
dropped a single into left field to plate the winning
run.
The first two of five McDaniel errors in the home second led to
three unearned runs.
Run-producing singles from Matthew Pace (Baltimore,
Md./North County) and Jon Zimmerman (Lemoyne,
Pa./Cedar Cliff) in the top of the fourth pulled the
visitors within 3-2.
A two-run single from pace in the top of the fifth turned the
one-run deficit into a one-run advantage before two more errors in
the bottom of the inning re-established the one-run lead for the
hosts.
A double from Harold Baines, Jr. (St. Michaels, Md./St.
Michaels) and singles from Russell Coover
(Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue Mountain) and Troy
Tipton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) evened the game in the
top of the seventh.
A Zimmerman single, Reitz double and Coover sacrifice fly gave the
Green Terror a 7-5 lead in the top of the
10th.
An error, three consecutive singles and a Benavage double in the
fifth inning of game one gave Ursinus a 7-4 lead.
With one out, Lockman was hit by a pitch before a Umstead double
scored Benavage.
A Randolph two-run double capped the seven-run frame.
McDaniel took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second before the Bears
countered with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
A Kevin Furman single scored Mike
Schwager to stretch the lead to 4-2 in the third before
the Green Terror tallied solo runs in each of the next two innings
to knot the game.
Zeb Engle struck out 12 in the complete-game
opener to improve to 7-0.
McDaniel concludes its stretch of six conference games in four days
with a doubleheader at Muhlenberg on Sunday. The first game begins
at 12:30 p.m.
