GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jon Zimmerman (Lemoyne,
Pa./Cedar Cliff) rapped out three hits with a double, two
RBIs and three runs scored to lead McDaniel to a 12-3 victory at
Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on
Thursday.
Opening a stretch of six conference games in four days, the Green
Terror (13-8, 6-4 CC) took advantage of five errors by the Bullets
(12-15, 6-5 CC) in the first three innings to build a 5-0 lead but
also notched 12 hits to reach double figures in the runs column for
just the second time in nine games after three straight 10-run
games.
Craig Barrows went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for
Gettysburg, which fell at home to McDaniel for the first time since
a 10-4 Green Terror win in 2000.
After both teams went 1-2-3 in the first inning, Russell
Coover (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue Mountain) dropped a
single into center field and advanced to second on a fielding
error.
After a failed pickoff attempt allowed Coover to move to third,
Andrew Worm (Easton, Md./Easton) knocked him home
for the game's first run,
Zimmerman roped a one-out double down the left-field line in the
third inning before moving to third on a groundout.
Three errors coupled with a Coover single, Troy Tipton
(Hanover, Pa./South Western) RBI double and
Matthew Pace (Baltimore, Md./North County) RBI
single accounted for a four-run frame to stretch the lead to
5-0.
A Worm single and Pace first-pitch home run in the top of the fifth
pushed the lead to 7-0 before a Mike Backus double
and Barrows single in the bottom of the sixth broke up the
shutout.
A Zimmerman walk, wild pitch and Harold Baines, Jr. (St.
Michaels, Md./St. Michaels) infield single stretched the
lead to 8-1 in the top of the eighth.
Gettysburg responded with a single run in the bottom of the eighth
before three walks in the top of the ninth loaded the bases with
two outs.
Zimmerman poked a single through the right side to plate two runs
before a Baines double capped the four-run frame.
A Kevin Langhauser triple and Sam
Stabert sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning set the
final margin.
Baines, Coover, Worm and Pace all recorded two hits for the Green
Terror. Pace added three RBIs while Baines had two.
Brian Rosato (Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley) pitched
seven innings, striking out five to even his record at
3-3.
The Green Terror completes the home-and-home series at home against
Gettysburg on Friday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
