WESTMINSTER, Md. – Tyler Persun (Mount Joy,
Pa./Donegal) threw his first collegiate nine-inning
complete game, striking out nine along the way to lead McDaniel in
a 3-1 Centennial Conference (CC) victory over Washington (Md.) on
Monday.
Persun's battery-mate Justin Reitz (Halifax,
Pa./Halifax) went 4-for-4 with two RBIs to key the offense
for the Green Terror (12-8, 5-4 CC), who plated all three of its
runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to forge a season split
with the Shoremen (9-13, 3-7 CC) after dropping an 11-2 decision in
Chestertown six days earlier.
Matt Boucher was one of three Washington players
with two hits, scoring the visitors' lone run.
Trailing 1-0, Troy Tipton (Hanover, Pa./South
Western) led off the home seventh with a double into the
left-field corner.
After an Andrew Worm (Easton, Md./Easton)
sacrifice bunt moved pinch-runner Matt Teter (Spring Grove,
Pa./Susquehannock) to third base, Zach Croft
(Laurel, Md./DeMatha) belted a double to the gap in
right-center to knot the game.
Sergio Nieto (Mameroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) was hit
by the second pitch he saw to make it first and second with one
out.
Chris Smith recorded his sixth strikeout a batter
later before leading for Harry Woods. Reitz
greeted Woods with a first-pitch double to right-center that a
diving Ben Jardot just missed, allowing Croft and
Nieto to score for the McDaniel lead.
Persun allowed only a Greg Perret two-out double
in the eighth to finish what he started and improve to 4-2 on the
season.
Singles from Boucher and Tony Tozzolo to lead off
the visitor fourth put runners at the corners.
After Tozzolo stole second, Jardot lifted a ball to deep center to
allow Boucher to score on the sacrifice fly.
The Green Terror returns to action at Gettysburg on Tuesday. Game
time is 3:30 p.m.
