WESTMINSTER, Pa. – Dave Fioretti threw a
complete game, scattering six hits and striking out 11 with no
walks to lead Johns Hopkins to a 10-3 victory over McDaniel in
Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Tuesday.
Russell Coover (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue
Mountain) rapped out to of those six hits for the Green
Terror (8-6, 1-2 CC), including a third-inning home
run.
Following Coover's first long ball of the season, the Blue
Jays (9-8, 2-1 CC) fell in a 3-2 hole but plated the game's
final eight runs and held McDaniel to just one base runner over the
final 6 1/3 innings.
A hit batter to lead off the fifth inning followed by three hits
and walk turned the one-run deficit into a one-run
lead.
A Dave Kahn sacrifice fly stretched the lead to
5-3.
After being limited to a pair of doubles over the next two innings,
Lee Bolyard and John Swarr put
together back-to-back singles to lead off the top of the
eighth.
An error on a sacrifice bunt attempt allowed Bolyard to score from
second before Brian Youchak cleared the bases with
a single through the right side of a drawn-in infield.
With one out, Todd Emr and Brendan
Walsh each rapped out singles to push the lead to 9-3
before Kahn capped the frame with a RBI groundout.
Four straight singles in the bottom of the first, including a
two-run knock from Matthew Pace (Baltimore, Md./North
County) staked McDaniel to an early 2-0 lead.
A Jesse Sikorski RBI double in the top of the
second cut the deficit in half before a error and RBI groundout in
the visitor third evened the game.
With two outs in the bottom of the frame, Coover gave the Green
Terror its final lead before Fioretti settled in a retired 12
straight batters.
Zach Croft (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) broke up the
stretch with a seventh-inning single.
Fioretti finished the game retiring seven in a row, including four
by strikeout.
The Green Terror concludes the home-and-home series at Johns
Hopkins on Friday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
