WESTMINSTER, Md. – Sergio Nieto (Mameroneck,
N.Y./Rye Neck) went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles to lead
McDaniel to a 13-8 victory over Dickinson in the Centennial
Conference (CC) baseball opener for both teams on Tuesday.
Justin Reitz (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) added three
hits, including the 100th of his career for the Green
Terror (8-4, 1-0 CC) while Brandon Kline (Myersville,
Md./Middletown) added two doubles and four
RBIs.
Bart Marchant paced the Red Devils (4-11, 0-1 CC)
with two hits that included a ninth-inning grand slam.
With one out in the bottom of the first, Andrew Worm
(Easton, Md./Easton) poked a double to the gap in
right-center – the first of nine extra-base hits for McDaniel
on the day.
After a Nieto single put runners at the corners, Worm scored on a
passed ball to give the Green Terror a 1-0 lead.
A Russell Coover (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue
Mountain) triple off the wall in left and Matthew
Pace (Baltimore, Md./North County) RBI single up the
middle with two outs in the bottom of the third doubled the
advantage.
Worm drew a walk to lead off the home fourth before back-to-back
doubles from Nieto and Kline made it a 4-0 game.
Kline later scored on a fielding error to stretch the lead to
5-0.
Singles from Mike Schuster, Peter
Bilali and Tyler Rosa gave Dickinson its
first run of the game in the top of the fifth.
Leading 6-1, the Green Terror added six in the bottom of the
seventh keyed by doubles from Nieto and Kline.
After Reitz notched his 100th career hit, Harold
Baines, Jr. (St. Michaels, Md./St. Michaels) capped the
frame with a two-run home run down the right-field
line.
Pace laced a ball over the left-field fence in home eighth to
stretch the lead to 13-1 before a pair of errors and
Marchant's grand slam keyed a seven-run ninth to set the
final margin.
Tyler Persun (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) struck out
seven in 6 1/3 innings to pick up the win for McDaniel and improve
to 2-1 on the season.
Every starter in the Green Terror lineup got a hit in the 18-hit
affair, including two knocks apiece from Pace and
Worm.
McDaniel concludes the home-and-home series at Dickinson on Friday.
Game time is 3:30 p.m.
