Baer, Stone propel McDaniel over Ursinus in CC opener

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Brittany Bear (Westminster, Md./Westminster) matched her career high with seven goals to lead McDaniel to a 15-8 victory over Ursinus in the Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse opener for both teams on Saturday.

            Jennifer Stone (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) tallied three of her four goals for the Green Terror (5-2, 1-0 CC) during a five-goal spurt over 11 minutes, 55 seconds in the second half that turned a 6-5 advantage into a 10-5 lead with 14:59 to play.
            Alyssa Thren and Kristen Wampole led the Bears (1-4, 0-1 CC) with two goals apiece.
            Trailing 2-1 after Wampole found the back of the net just 5:21 into the game, Kelly Scheler (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) tallied unassisted to knot the game with 16:48 showing.
            Stephanie Serbun (Abington, Pa./Abington) finished a Stephanie Sudbrook (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) pass 1 minute, 38 seconds later to give McDaniel the lead for good.
            Stone stretched the lead to two with 12:55 on the clock before Wampole trimmed the Ursinus deficit to one just 42 seconds later.
            Back-to-back markers from Bear stretched the lead to 6-3 but Thren tallied with 4:36 remaining in the first half and Kim Peifer scored 1:24 into the second half to slice the deficit to one.
            Brittany Lines (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) found the back of the net for the first time this season off one of four Lindsey McDonald (Germantown, Md./Damascus) assists to spark a 9-3 run to close the game.
            Three straight Stone tallies stretched the lead to 10-5 with 15:11 to play before Baer won the ensuing draw control and finished her sixth hat trick of the season 12 seconds later.
            Lindsay Urban broke up the stretch but two straight Baer goals made it a 13-6 game with 9:21 showing.
            Thren cut the deficit to six 1:10 later but Baer continued her roll with goals No. 6 and 7 just 53 seconds apart to close the Green Terror scoring with 5:46 on the clock.
            Emily Diehl set the final margin with a free-position goal at the 3:04 mark.
            Baer added four draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover while Stone had two draw controls and three ground balls.
            The Green Terror finished with a 35-15 advantage in shots and 32-19 edge in ground balls. McDaniel won 15 draw controls as a team.
            The Green Terror returns to action at third-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
