Catholic downs McDaniel

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mike Goodman went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored to lead Catholic to a 8-4 victory over McDaniel in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday.

Harold Baines, Jr. (St. Michaels, Md./St. Michaels) went 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored to pace the Green Terror (2-1), who got its first home run of the season from Sergio Nieto (Mameroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck).
Eamonn Burke added two hits for the Cardinals (5-6), who limited McDaniel to just one run after the third inning two days after the squad posted 13 in the final three at bats of Sunday's doubleheader sweep.
Trailing 1-0 after Goodman drove in Joseph Devine with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first, the Green Terror took advantage of three singles and a pair of errors to plate three runs in the third.
Jon Zimmerman (Lemoyne, Pa./Cedar Cliff) led off with a double and stole second before an error allowed Zach Croft (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) to reach base and Zimmerman to score on the miscue.
Singles from Baines and Russell Coover (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue Mountain) made it a 2-1 game with runners at the corners.
After a Troy Tipton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) walk loaded the bases and chased starter Tom Egan, the Cardinals got a double play but Baines scored for the 3-1 advantage.
A Dave Grear two-run double keyed a four-run bottom of the frame, giving Catholic a 5-3 lead.
Nieto's one-out solo shot in the top of the fourth pulled the visitors within 5-4 but an unearned run in the sixth and two runs in the eighth set the final margin.
Andrew Moldawer picked up the win for the Cardinals, striking out two while Michael Bzozowski fanned three over the final 2 2/3 innings to earn the save.
Brian Rosato (Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley) was tagged with the loss for the Green Terror but freshman Danny Snight (Silver Spring, Md./St. Johns's College) struck out five over 4 1/3 innings in his debut on the mound.
McDaniel returns to action when its opens its southern swing with a doubleheader against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Saturday. The first game begins at 10 a.m.
