WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel will host Dickinson in the
first-round game of the 2009 Centennial Conference (CC)
women's basketball championship on Wednesday. Game time is 7
p.m.
The fourth-seeded Greeen Terror (14-11, 11-7 CC) faces the
fifth-seeded Red Devils (14-11, 11-7 CC) and will meet for the
third time in the CC tournament, including in the 2005 title game.
The two teams split the previous playoff meetings with the visiting
team winning both times. The winner advances to Saturday's
semifinals at top-seeded Muhlenberg (22-3, 18-0 CC) at 1
p.m.
The day's second semifinal pits second-seeded Franklin &
Marshall (14-11, 11-7 CC) against third-seeded Johns Hopkins
(13-12, 11-7 CC), slated to begin at 3 p.m. or 30 minutes
following the conclusion of the day's first semifinal.
The championship game will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Admission for all games is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
Youths 12 and under as well as students from participating
institutions, who present their ID, are free.
The tournament's champion will earn the CC's automatic
bid to the 2009 NCAA Division III tournament, slated to begin on
Wednesday, Mar. 4. The NCAA field will be announced on Sunday night
and the brackets revealed Monday morning.
McDaniel is seeking its fourth CC championship in the last eight
years and fifth berth in the NCAA tournament. The Green Terror
claimed the conference crown and an NCAA bid in 2002, 2004 and
2005. The squad also earned an at-large bid in 2007.
Muhlenberg and Johns Hopkins are in search of their fifth CC titles
while Dickinson goes for its second conference crown. Franklin
& Marshall seeks its first conference title.
Ali Moreland (Davidsonville, Md./South River)
leads the team in scoring (13.6 points per game), assists (78) and
steals (72). She also ranks third in rebounding (4.8 rebounds per
game). Ashley Lyles (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent
Pallotti) ranks second in scoring (8.7 ppg) and rebounding
(5.6 rpg). She leads the team with 47 blocks. Whitney
Snoops (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) leads the
team in rebounding (6.5 rpg) and is third in scoring (7.4
ppg).
