WESTMINSTER, Md. – Whitney Snoops (Millersville,
Md./Archbishop Spalding) recorded a team-best 14 points to
lead McDaniel to a 67-66 victory over Johns Hopkins in Centennial
Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Thursday.
Ali Moreland (Davidsonville, Md./South River)
added 11 points and a team-best seven rebounds for the Green Terror
(9-6, 7-3 CC), who took over sole possession of second place in the
conference standings after losses by Dickinson and
Gettysburg.
Lyndsay Burton, the reigning CC Player of the
Week, notched her sixth consecutive 20-point performance with 23
points for the Blue Jays (6-9, 4-4 CC), who outscored the Green
Terror 14-2 over the final 5:40 to nearly erase a 16-point
deficit.
After a Snoops basket-and-foul play stretched the McDaniel lead
back to 13 with 5:40 on the clock, Burton countered with a short
jumper to spark the late rally.
Anastasia Wynn, who had four points in the first
35 minutes of the game, connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to
close the deficit to five with 3:53 showing.
Two Wynn free throws with 3:14 to play made it a 65-62 game but
Lauren Wyble (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) hit
an elbow jumper just over a minute later to stretch the lead back
to five.
A Burton layup closed the deficit to three with 1:49 on the
clock.
Wynn finished her 14-point night, hitting a jumper with 57 seconds
to play.
After a missed jumper at the other end, Johns Hopkins rebounded and
advanced to the frontcourt before calling its final timeout with
30.9 seconds showing.
The Green Terror, who had only committed four second-half fouls,
were whistled for two fouls in the next 15 seconds before missing a
jumper that Kara Smith (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview)
rebounded with 11.1 seconds to play.
After the Blue Jays' sixth foul on that rebound, McDaniel
called a timeout. Out of the timeout, a foul with 9.4 seconds on
the clock sent the Green Terror to the line for the
bonus.
After a miss on the front end of the 1-and-1, Wynn collected the
rebounding and raced to the other end but her 15-foot jump shot
from the left wing clanked off the iron and Sally Grace
(Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) corralled her
fourth rebound as the buzzer sounded, preserving McDaniel's
fourth straight win.
Keyed by five points from Morland and four points from Meg
Biggart (Darien, Conn./Darien) – playing against her
older sister for the time – the Green Terror opened the game
on a 13-4 run over the first 4:40.
Trailing 20-14 with 9:15 to play, Johns Hopkins put together a 7-0
run over the next 2 minutes, 48 seconds to take its first lead of
the game, 21-20.
Two Snoops free throws halted the spurt. After a back-and-forth
three-minute stretch, two Smith free throws keyed a 9-3 burst over
the final 2:30 of the stanza, turning a one-point edge into a 37-30
lead at the break.
McDaniel stretched the lead to 16 on a Grace layup with 13:21 to
play before the Blue Jays clawed to within eight just over six
minutes later.
Two Moreland free throws coupled with the Snoops three-point play
stretched the lead back out, before Johns Hopkins' furious
rally in the waning minutes.
Kristin Phillips rounded out the double-digit
scorers for the Blue Jays, netting 16 points to go with a team-high
nine rebounds and four streals. Jenna Berninger
dished out four helpers.
Catherine Mills (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) recorded
four assists for the Green Terror.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Bryn Mawr on Saturday.
