McDaniel Mourns Loss of Men's Basketball Coach Kevin Curley

WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College is saddened by the loss of head men's basketball coach Kevin Curley who passed away on Wednesday, May 27 after battling metastatic esophageal cancer.

The winningest coach in the history of the men's basketball program, Curley became the first coach in team history to total 200 wins at McDaniel with a 60-58 win over Ramapo at home on Nov. 14, 2025. He surpassed Alex Ober '63 as the winningest coach in program history on Nov. 12, 2024 with his 186th win in a 76-61 win over Penn State Scranton at home.

Curley came to McDaniel in 2007, leading the men's basketball program for nearly two decades. During that time, he led the Green Terror to seven appearances in the Centennial Conference Men's Basketball Championship and five in the ECAC Division III Men's Basketball Championship, including back-to-back seasons in 2025 and 2026. He was named a two-time Centennial Conference Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2014 and mentored 19 All-Centennial Conference selections.

In what would be his final season in 2025-26, Curley led the team to its first conference tournament appearance since 2016 and its second-straight in the ECAC. McDaniel also posted its first win over Johns Hopkins since Feb. 10, 2016 with a 66-61 road win on February 11. The win also marked the first road victory for the Green Terror at Hopkins since Dec. 1, 2015.

Curley guided McDaniel to its first postseason win in program history a year earlier with a 72-63 victory over Pitt-Greensburg in the opening round 2025 ECAC Division III Men's Basketball Championship.

"During his time on the Hill, Kevin served as a coach, mentor, and friend to his many student-athletes," said Director of Athletics Jeremy Shepherd. "He has also been a great friend and colleague to our entire campus community and we will miss him immensely."

Prior to McDaniel, Curley spent nine seasons as an assistant coach at Division I Colgate after beginning his coaching career as an assistant at Bethany College from 1994-98.

A native of State College, Pennsylvania, Curley played two seasons at Penn State Altoona before graduating from The Pennsylvania State University in 1994. He earned a master's degree in physical education with a concentration in Athletic Coaching from West Virginia in 1996.

Curley is survived by his wife Allison, and their three children, Caroline, Nathaniel, and Gabriel.
