David Kearney scored a team-high 27 points to reach 1,000 for his career in a 71-68 loss for the McDaniel College men's basketball team to Rutgers-Camden in the first round of the 2026 ECAC DIII Men's Basketball Championship on Saturday.
Kearney became the 20
th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone, becoming the first since assistant coach
Chuck Contee '25 to accomplish the feat last season. He scored 20-plus points in 12 games this season.
Both teams combined to score 19 points in the games first's four minutes. A free throw from Kearney cut the McDaniel deficit to two with 14:39 left in the first half, later tying the game at 17-17 on a layup from junior
Bruce Black. The Scarlet Knights (13-11) responded with five straight points to retake the lead, growing the lead to 32-24 with 4:43 left. After a three-pointer made the score 37-26 with 3:07 to play, McDaniel responded with a 9-0 run to close the half to trail by two.
The Green Terror took their first lead of the game at the 16:47 left in the second half on a layup from junior
Ryan Shaffer to go ahead by two, 41-39. A Shaffer three-pointer with 15:55 remaining put McDaniel back in front as both teams traded baskets over the next five minutes. Five straight points from Rutgers-Camden broke a 57-57 tie with just over eight minutes left, but the Green Terror cut the deficit to one on a free throw from Kearney with 48 second remaining. The Scarlet Knights scored the final three points of the game to seal the win.
Kearney scored 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting while sophomore
Ashenafi Stuart scored 13 points on 3-of-6 shooting from three-point range. Senior
Matt Kearney scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds while Black scored nine points off the bench.
