Thomas Monn advanced to the championship semifinals at 149 pounds to lead the McDaniel College men's wrestling team at the Region III Championships hosted by The College of New Jersey on Friday.
The Green Terror currently sit in 12th place out of 21 teams with 39 points. The host Lions are in first place with 97.5 points, just four points ahead of second-place Messiah.
McDaniel has three wrestlers still alive in the tournament with Monn in the championship bracket and two in the consolation bracket. Junior
Alex Taylor is in the consolation quarterfinals at 174 pounds while first-year
Isaiah Brewster is in the consolation quarterfinals at 125 pounds.
Monn posted a 3-0 record on day one with two tech falls. He began the day with an 18-1 tech fall in just 2:13 over Eoghan Ohara of Muhlenberg before winning by injury default over NYU's John Mairano. Monn advanced to the championship semifinals with another tech fall over a Centennial Conference rival in Freddy Pimental of Johns Hopkins, 22-6.
Taylor was pinned by the region's fourth-ranked wrestler in AJ Cerulli of Ursinus in his opening match before responding with three consecutive wins beginning with a 10-2 major decision over Muhlenberg's Lucas Velando. Taylor then posted a 7-3 decision over Scranton's Charles Kitching.
Taylor then advanced to the consolation quarterfinals by medical forfeit against Andrew Huesgen of Merchant Marine who is ranked eighth in Region 3.
Brewster fell by tech fall to Eastern's Malik Asfour who is ranked second in the region before also responding with three consecutive wins. He defeated Albright's Hezekia Molina-Hagdu by an 11-4 decision before posting a 4-1 sudden victory over Noah Hinkel of Gettysburg.
Brewster then advanced to the consolation quarterfinals with a 12-4 major decision against Scranton's Lucas Griffin.
Other notable performances included senior
Kaden Bryan who is ranked fifth in the region at 285 pounds. He picked up his 20th win of the season with a 9-3 decision over David Pierson of York (Pa.). Bryan is the sixth different Green Terror to win at least 20 matches this season.
Senior
Andre Allen recorded a win at 157 pounds while first-year
Andrew Dolezel went 2-2 at 141 pounds with two tech falls.
Monn looks to win his third regional championship in four years and qualify for his third NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships on Saturday when competition on the final gets underway at 10 a.m.
