Monn Wins Second Regional Title, Returns to Nationals

GRANTHAM, Pa. - On Saturday, McDaniel College wrestling junior Thomas Monn won the 149-pound title at the NCAA Region 3 Championships hosted by Messiah, earning a return trip the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships later this month.

The Green Terror finished 11th out 18 teams with a total of 53.0 points.

Monn, who is ranked 10th nationally by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and first in Region 3, won his second regional championship and will make his second appearance at the national championships. In 2023, he became the first freshman All-American in program history with a sixth-place finish at nationals.

Monn finished with a perfect 4-0 record, totaling two falls, including one in 5:28 over No. 14-ranked Michael Conklin of TCNJ in the finals. Monn advanced to the championship with a tight 2-0 decision over No. 15 Ethan Composto of Gettysburg in the semifinals, improving to 3-0 against his Centennial Conference rival this season.

McDaniel has had at least one wrestler qualify for the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in each of the last three seasons.

Ranked fourth in the region at 157 pounds, senior Xavier Howard, who earned All-America honors at 157 pounds last year with an eighth-place finish at nationals, finished sixth. After beginning his run with two wins, he fell to No. 3 Cooper Pontelandolfo in the semifinals and then to Merchant Marine's Edward Pinc, who is ranked seventh in the region, in the consolation semifinals.

Howard concluded his tournament against fifth-ranked Clay Gainer of Messiah in fifth-place match.

Senior Alex DuFour, ranked fifth at 125 pounds, finished fifth after posting a 4-3 decision over sixth-ranked Franco Mazza of Ursinus in the fifth-place match. DuFour fell to No. 11 Keito Shaw of Alvernia in the semifinals and then to No. 8 Harrison Gordon of NYU in the consolation semifinals.

Senior Val Pryor was the fourth place winner for the Green Terror, finishing eighth at 197 pounds after totaling three wins. After opening with two wins, he was edged by a 2-0 decision to Messiah's Sawyer Dereszynski, ranked seventh in Region 3, in the quarterfinals. He advanced to the seventh-place match, but was edged by Rich Fronheiser of King's (Pa.), 5-4.
