GRANTHAM, Pa. - Seniors
Thomas Monn and
Romeo Tsai combined for nine wins to lead the McDaniel College men's wrestling team in its season opener at the Messiah Invitational on Saturday.
The Green Terror finished fifth as a team for the second-straight year, totaling 105.5 points. The host Falcons won the team team title with a total of 146 points, six ahead of second-place Washington and Lee.
Monn went 6-0 in capturing the 149-pound title for the third time in four appearances. Ranked third nationally and first in region 3, he totaled one fall, three tech falls, and one major decision while posting a 7-0 decision over seventh-ranked Evan Linder of Washington and Lee in the final.
In four appearances in the annual event, Monn totaled a 16-1 record with four falls, four tech falls, and four major decisions while winning in 2022, 2023, and 2025. Last year, he advanced to the final, but had to medically forfeit to Linder.
Monn now has 108 career wins, tying him with Ryan O'Boyle '16 for third in program history. Monn's career record stands at 108-11 for a .908 winning percentage, the second-best in program history behind Gary Scholl who 93.3 percent of his matches from 1967-71.
Meanwhile, Tsai finished second at 125 pounds, advancing to the final before losing by decision to Michael Adams of Ursinus. Tsai went 3-1 with two falls, including one in just 45 seconds over Brockport's Robert Armstrong in the championship semifinals.
Junior
Kaden Bryan posted a 4-1 record, totaling three falls and one tech fall, to finish third at 285 pounds. His only loss came in the championship semifinals to Carter Stack of Washington and Lee who is currently ranked third in region 4. However, Bryan rebounded with two wins, including a fall in 6:00 against Centennial Conference rival Jake Pomykata of Johns Hopkins in the third-place match.
In the championship quarterfinals, Bryan posted a fall in 2:13 over Ksawery Niewadomy of Elizabethtown who is ranked third in region 3.
First-year
Isaac Ogunlade finished fourth at 197 pounds, posting a 3-2 record with one fall. He picked up his first career win in sudden victory over Simon Lingle of Brockport in the first round before later losing to Tucker Seidel of Messiah by fall in the third-place match.
At 141 pounds, first-year
Andrew Dolezel finished sixth with a 4-2 record, two tech falls, and two major decisions. After posting his first career win with a tech fall over Brockport's Dan O`Dea in the first round, he advanced to the championship quarterfinals before losing to 14th-ranked Shaun Quirk of Messiah by tech fall.
Dolezel responded with back-to-back major decisions to advance to the consolation semifinals and finished sixth after no contest against Arcadia's Lucas Tirpak in the fifth-place match.
First-year
Branden Whyte-Taylor went 3-2 at 125 pounds, earning all three wins by fall, while first-year
Alex Taylor was 3-2 at 184 pounds with one fall.
McDaniel returns to action next Saturday, Nov. 8 with a dual match at Elizabethtown beginning at 7 p.m.
