McDaniel Holds Off Dickinson to Stay Perfect at Home

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Senior Lil Overcash played all 40 minutes and barely missed a triple-double, finishing with 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists to lead the McDaniel College women's basketball team to a 68-58 win over Centennial Conference rival Dickinson on Wednesday night.

The Green Terror (11-4, 2-2) improved their home record to 7-0 and have not lost inside the Gill Center since Feb. 17, 2024. The win snapped a 10-game losing streak against Dickinson and marked the first win against the Red Devils in Christin Gowan's tenure as head coach.

Junior Elaina Beckett led all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Sophomore Teya McConnaha earned her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds while sophomore Raegan Lenz scored 12 points and dished out three assists.

The Red Devils (9-6, 3-1) took control early with a 7-2 run out of the gate, but the Green Terror snatched the lead back after a short run of their own. Both teams traded baskets for much of the first quarter, with six lead changes over the final 3:52 of the period. Dickinson scored with 40 seconds to go to end the opening quarter with a 17-16 lead.

Dickinson scored the first four points of the second quarter before McDaniel cut the lead to one after a free throw from Beckett at the 5:20 mark. The Green Terror took their first lead of the quarter after a jumper from McConnaha with 3:41 to play, making the score 26-25. A three-point play from Overcash pushed the lead to five with just over a minute left, and sophomore Carli Vogel ended the first half on a high note with a layup as time expired.

McDaniel opened the third quarter on a 9-2 run to push the lead to 12, punctuated by an Overcash three-pointer at the 8:00 mark. Dickinson then scored the next six points to cut the deficit in half before a scoring drought of over two-and-a-half minutes plagued both teams. Vogel scored on a layup to break the drought and grow the Green Terror lead to 10, a lead they would take to the end of the third quarter.

Both teams exchanged baskets to begin the fourth, with McDaniel holding an 11-point advantage at the 2:47 mark. Four quick Dickinson points cut the lead to seven with 2:18 to play before a lengthy review period took place to determine possession as McDaniel attempted to break a Dickinson press. A layup from McConnaha with 58 seconds left iced the win, as Overcash nailed two free throws for the game's final points.

The Green Terror made 7-of-14 shots in the fourth quarter and made all four of their free throw attempts in the final 10 minutes. McDaniel shot 43 percent from the floor for the game and made 9-of-10 free throws. McConnaha and Overcash gave McDaniel a significant rebounding edge as the Green Terror grabbed 42 boards, compared to only 30 for the Red Devils.

The Green Terror hit the road for their next contest when they face Swarthmore on Saturday at 1 pm.
