McDaniel Shuts Down Swarthmore with Dominant Defense

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – A dominant defensive effort led the way for the McDaniel College women's basketball team in a 53-33 road win over Swarthmore on Saturday.

The Green Terror (12-4, 3-2) collected 11 steals and five blocks while forcing 16 turnovers and holding the Garnet (5-10, 1-5) to their lowest scoring output of the season. The win matches the team's win total from last season.

Sophomore Raegan Lenz stuffed the stat sheet with a game-high 12 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and five blocks. Sophomore Carli Vogel finished with season-highs of 11 points and eight rebounds off the bench while junior Elaina Beckett also finished in double figures with 10 points and seven boards. Senior Lil Overcash drilled a pair of three-pointers and recorded three assists and two steals.

McDaniel started strong in the first quarter, closing the opening frame on an 11-1 run over the final 4:44 of the period. The Green Terror maintained a double-digit edge through the second quarter thanks to strong free throw shooting. McDaniel made 7-of-8 free throws in the quarter and held the Garnet to only eight points in the quarter. The defense stymied Swarthmore for much of the first half, as the Garnet made only 5-of-28 shots in the first 20 minutes and missed 10-of-11 three-point attempts.

Swarthmore battled back in the third quarter with a short run to open the period. But the Green Terror closed the door with strong shooting and defense. McDaniel made 6-of-9 field goals in the quarter and expanded the lead to 17 at the end of three. Both teams struggled offensively in the fourth, as Swarthmore shot only 22 percent from the field in the quarter while McDaniel shot 40 percent. The Green Terror again held the Garnet to a five-point quarter, and late scores from Lenz and freshman Kendra Mason put the finishing touches on a 20-point win.

The Green Terror secured their first road win by 20 or more points in conference play since a 72-34 victory over Bryn Mawr on Jan. 6, 2024. McDaniel grabbed 42 rebounds to Swarthmore's 29 and limited the Garnet to 23.6 percent shooting for the game in their best defensive effort of the season.

McDaniel continues a three-game road trip on Wednesday against No. 25 Johns Hopkins. Tip-off is slated for 6 pm.
