No. 23 Johns Hopkins Escapes With Two-Point Win Over McDaniel

BALTIMORE, Md. - Johns Hopkins totaled 22 offensive rebounds, including three in the final 27 seconds as the No. 23 Blue Jays escaped with a 50-48 victory over the McDaniel College women's basketball team Wednesday night at Goldfarb Gym.

The Green Terror (12-5, 3-3 CC) held Hopkins to just 28.4 percent shooting while not allowing a three-pointer as the Blue Jays went 0-for-15 from behind the arc.

Sophomore Teya McConnaha led the way with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and added five rebounds in just 19 minutes. Senior Lil Overcash had nine points, six rebounds and three assists while sophomore Caroline Barbalato added a season-high nine points to go along with three rebounds and three steals.

McDaniel led by as many as 11 as they scored the game's first 11 points en route to a 15-6 advantage after the first quarter. The visitors limited Hopkins to just one made field goal on 19 attempts in the first 10 minutes as the Blue Jays scored four points from the free throw line, going 4-for-6.

Hopkins made just 2-of-14 attempts in the second quarter and went 3-for-33 in the first half as it trailed by eight at the break, 22-14. The Green Terror could not take advantage as they also struggled from the floor in the second, hitting on just 2-of-13 attempts as the two teams combined for only 15 points.

The Blue Jays (13-3, 5-1 CC) found their stroke in the third, making 10-of-19 attempts from the floor and scoring 20 of their 22 points in the paint. After Barbalato gave the visitors a 32-22 lead with 6:06 remaining, Hopkins scored the final 14 points to take their first lead and a 36-32 advantage after three.

Hopkins led by as many as six in the fourth quarter, 47-41 with 4:35 left, before a 7-2 run pulled McDaniel within one following a three-pointer by McConnaha with 1:03 to play.

However, despite missing their final two shots, the Blue Jays grabbed the offensive rebound both times and converted 1-of-2 free throws with five seconds remaining to remain undefeated in seven home games this season and stay within one game of first place and No. 9-ranked Gettysburg in the conference standings.

McDaniel returns to action next Wednesday, Jan. 29 when they travel to Keystone state to take on the ninth-ranked Bullets. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
