LANCASTER, Pa. - The Green Terror picked up their third conference win of the year with a late surge in game one against the Diplomats. Franklin & Marshall responded in the second game by building a seven run lead, and holding off a late rally from McDaniel.
Sophomore
Hunter Darke picked up his second win of the season for McDaniel (15-10, 3-3 CC) and
Tyler Yohn drove in three runs against Franklin & Marshall (17-11, 4-2 CC). The In the second game, the Diplomats tallied the first seven runs of the game and locked down the Green Terror offense. Despite a late push including two home runs from fellow freshmen
Ben Davis and
Todd Calhoun, McDaniel could not close the gap and fell 7-4 to split the double header.
McDaniel 5, Franklin & Marshall 4
Ryan Martino got the start for McDaniel and delivered with five solid innings of work including four strikeouts. The Diplomats did strike first with a two-run homer by Patrick Cettina in the second inning. They tacked on two more runs over the third and fourth innings to build a 4-0 lead.Â
In the top of the fifth, senior
Billy Wheatley singled up the middle. With two outs on the board freshman
Robert Weer was hit by a pitch, then advanced to second on a passed ball.
Yohn came up next and drove in both runs with a single into right center field.Â
Trailing by two in the seventh inning, McDaniel loaded the bases.
Wheatley tagged up and scored from third on a sacrifice fly by
Yohn. Senior
Hunter Kelly stepped to the plate and laced a ball into left field scoring
Santino DeFilippo to tie the game at 4-all.Â
An inning later
Wheatley and
Jake Smith got on base with
DeFilippo up next.
DeFilippo put the ball in play forcing an error by the Diplomats shortstop to score the go-ahead run. After a stellar performance from
Darke, freshman
Dylan Parsons came into the game for McDaniel and locked down Franklin & Marshall to get the 5-4 win.
Franklin & Marshall 7, McDaniel 4
The Diplomats jumped out to a four-run lead early in the second game. Dan Gelaf held McDaniel in check over that period of time with eight strikeouts over seven innings.Â
In the eighth inning,
Ben Davis put the Green Terror on the board with a solo home run over the right field fence.
Davis now has four collegiate home runs and is second on the team with 24 RBI's.
With one chance left in the bottom of the ninth,
Todd Calhoun cut into the Diplomats lead with a deep shot of his own.
Robert Weer singled, then scored off a triple from
Yohn. The Green Terror were able muster one more run, but could not close the gap and fell to the Diplomats 7-4.
McDaniel returns to action on Tuesday at Gettysburg. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
