The Green Terror (5-4) posted their third-straight win with a season-high 18 hits, including seven for extra bases.Â
Stevenson opened up the scoring in the top half of the first inning. The Mustangs designated hitter Nick Tamberino sent one through the left side of the infield scoring Jonathan Brandt for the early lead. The McDaniel offense came alive in the second inning with RBI's from
Billy Wheatley,
Jake Smith, and
Tyler Yohn.
Leading 4-1 heading into the third inning, the Mustangs rattled off five straight to take a two-run lead.
Jake Smith led off for the Green Terror and singled to left field.
Tyler Yohn stepped to the plate next and ripped a double down the left field line scoring smith.
Austin Goudeaux came up next and singled into left center scoring
Yohn. Right fielder
Connor Uhrig came up to the plate, and launched one into the left field corner scoring
Goudeaux, and the Green Terror were back on top.
The Mustangs came right back in the top of the fifth with an RBI single up the middle, then a two-run homer over the right field fence. Freshman
Dylan Parsons came out of the bullpen for McDaniel and put down the next three batters to end the inning.
Parsons,
Matt Speakman, and
Ryan Martino pitched the last three innings and held Stevenson scoreless.Â
In the bottom half of the sixth inning,
Hunter Kelly led off with a double into left field. The Mustangs pitcher then hit
Billy Wheatley to put two on base without any outs. Centerfielder
Santino DeFelippo stepped up next and laid down a perfect bunt advancing both runners. The top of the lineup came to bat with one out and a pair of runners in scoring position.
Joey Hubinger who had reached base in every game this season singled down the line scoring both
Kelly and
Wheatley to tie the game at 9-all.
Sophomore
Matt Speakman came in for
Parsons and walked the first batter he faced. With one out, the Mustangs had two runners on, but
Speakman settled into a zone and calmly put down the next two Stevenson hitters to hold the two-run lead.
The Mustangs (4-4) made one of their seven pitching changes heading into the bottom half of the inning, and the Green Terror offense attacked the new reliever. After
Tyler Yohn was hit in the foot,
Goudeaux singled into left field to put two runners on. After a
Uhrig flyout to right field advanced
Yohn to third,
Hunter Kelly stepped up and drove a ball deep into right field up against the wall scoring both
Yohn and
Goudeaux to take an 11-9 lead.Â
Speakman got out of another jam in the eighth inning with a few clutch pitches to maintain the two-run lead. In the bottom of the eighth inning,
Jake Smith connected on a deep shot to right field for his first homerun of the season to extend the Green Terror lead to three. In the top of the ninth
Ryan Martino came in to the game to close it out. After walking the first batter, he jammed up the Mustangs next hitter sending a grounder to second base.
Hubinger scooped it up and tossed it to
Yohn who snagged it with one hand and laced it over to first for the double play.
Ben Davis scooped up a slow rolling grounder to first for the game-ending out, and the Green Terror earned their fifth win of the season.
McDaniel returns to action on Friday at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. against Rivier. First pitch is at 4 p.m.
