Martino Leads McDaniel Past Rivier in Myrtle Beach, 14-1

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The McDaniel College baseball team put up six runs in the first inning and kept adding to the lead as the Green Terror beat Rivier, 14-1.

McDaniel (6-4) opened up its Spring Break trip at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach with senior Ryan Martino on the mound. In the top of the first, Martino retired all three batters he faced.

With one out in the bottom of the first, freshman Ben Davis came to the plate and doubled to the gap for the first hit of the game. Junior Jake Smith singled up the middle to score Davis before seniors Austin Goudeaux and Connor Uhrig were both hit by pitches with the bases loaded to score Smith and junior Tyler Yohn.

Senior Billy Wheatley walked to score another run and then a wild pitch brought in senior Hunter Kelly for the sixth run of the inning.

Martino cruised through the next three innings, recording back-to-back strikeouts to end the third inning.

McDaniel plated two more runs in the fifth on RBIs from Davis and junior Santino DeFilippo to take a 9-0 lead.

In his final inning of work, Martino tallied two more strikeouts to keep the Raiders (2-5) scoreless.

Freshman Gannon Williams entered in the seventh, striking out four over 2.0 innings as the Green Terror led 13-0 through seven before Rivier scored its lone run on a wild pitch in the eighth.

DeFilippo singled to center in the bottom of the seventh and freshman Todd Calhoun was hit by a pitch before Davis and Smith drew two of the 13 walks allowed by Raider pitching as the Green Terror pushed their lead to 13.

In the top of the ninth, sophomore Hunter Darke came out of the bullpen to close out the Raiders, facing a total of five batters and striking out three.

McDaniel returns to action on Saturday against Susquehanna on Griffith Field at 7 p.m.
