Alex LaVeck, the McDaniel College wrestling team is currently ranked eighth out of 21 teams after the first day of the 2023 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional hosted by Ithaca College.
The Green Terror have 48.5 points, 1.5 ahead of Centennial Conference rival Muhlenberg and one behind Cortland.
The region's top-ranked wrestler, Monn posted two more wins at 149 pounds to improve his record to 31-0 this season. He began his day with his 10th fall of the season in 4:31 over conference foe Dante Monaco of Ursinus. It was Monn's second win over Monaco in just over a month after he posted a 10-0 major decision in their first meeting on Jan. 21.
Monn advanced to the semifinals with a tech fall against Oswego State's Tyler Rossini, 18-3.
At 165 pounds, LaVeck picked up his 20th win of the season, improving his record to 21-6 and extending his win streak to eight with two decisions. He posted a 3-0 win over St. John Fisher's Logan Palmeri before edging Dennis Slovick of Pitt-Bradford in the quarterfinals, 6-2.
LaVeck, ranked fifth in the region, posted his second win over Slovick this season after recording a first-period fall in 1:35 at the Dr. Sam Case Duals on Nov. 20.
McDaniel has five wrestlers still in contention for a berth in the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships as the top three finishers in each weight class will advance to the national championships in Roanoke, Virginia March 10-11.
Like Monn, freshman
Ryan Athey also posted a team-best 11.5 points at 141 pounds. After opening with a win by medical forfeit over the region's fourth-ranked wrestler, Alfred State's Sean Peterson, Athey recorded a fall over Torin Bishop of St. John Fisher in 3:46 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Athey fell to Cortland's Cahal Donovan in the quarterfinals before avoiding elimination with a fall in 3:26 against Oswego State's Kaleb Carreon in the consolation bracket.
Fifth-ranked junior
Alex DuFour faced two conference rivals and a member of the host Bombers while posting a 2-1 record at 125 pounds. He opened with a 5-1 decision over Ithaca's Matt Haycook before falling to fourth-ranked Terry Adams of Ursinus in the quarterfinals. It marked the third meeting this season between DuFour and Adams.
DuFour rebounded with his third win of the season over Dhilan Patel of Johns Hopkins, 9-4. DuFour posted a 19-7 major decision over Patel to finish third at the Centennial Conference Wrestling Championships on Feb. 11.
Junior
Jaedyn Harris, who is ranked fourth in the region and 18th nationally by
The Open Mat, also posted a 2-1 record at 197 pounds. After an 8-3 wn over TCNJ's Joe Daddario, he lost by one point to RIT's Josh Harkless in the quarterfinals, 3-2. Harkless is ranked sixth in the region.
Harris avoided elimination with a tech fall over Deren Cercioglu of New Jersey City, 18-2.
At 184 pounds, senior
Michael Bromley concluded his career with two wins before falling to the region's second-ranked wrestler, TCNJ's Quinn Haddad, in the consolation bracket, 8-2.
Bromley posted a 31-7 record this season, including a mark of 19-3 at 184 pounds. His 31 wins are the 10th-most for a single season in school history. For his career, he finished with 71 wins, totaling a 71-38 record, and was a two-time All-Centennial Conference selection.
The NCAA Division III Mideast Regional concludes on Saturday with action getting underway at 11 a.m.
