ABERDEEN, Md. - The McDaniel College baseball team took an early lead against Montclair State, but the Red Hawks used a sixth-inning rally en route to a 22-5 victory Friday at Ripken Experience Aberdeen.
The Green Terror (2-2) wasted little time getting on the board in the first inning. Senior
Austin Goudeaux led off the game with a walk before stealing second. Senior
Joey Hubinger also walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch before junior
Jake Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Sophomore
Tyler Yohn sent a ball towards second base where an errant throw allowed both Goudeaux and Hubinger to score, giving McDaniel a 2-0 lead with just one out.
In the bottom of the first, freshman
Tyson Nercessian made his second start of the season and picked up where he left off last Saturday, quickly retiring the Red Hawk hitters to hold them scoreless.
Nercessian kept up the pace and worked an efficient first four innings, holding Montclair State scoreless with just two hits while stranding three runners on base.
In the top of the fifth, freshman
Kyle Carl was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a single by freshman
Ben Davis who led the Green Terror with two hits on the afternoon.
After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, Hubinger stepped up and ripped a single up the middle to score Carl before Smith followed a hard drive through the right side to score Davis.
The Red Hawks (2-0) offense came to life in the fifth when Ryan McKenna connected on a three-run home run to right center, cutting their deficit to one. Senior
Ryan Martino came out of the bullpen in relief of Nercessian, retiring two of the four batters he faced and stranding to runners in scoring position.
Trailing 4-3, Montclair State scored 15 runs on 10 hits in the bottom of the sixth to take a commanding 18-4 lead en route to sweeping the two-game set.
McDaniel returns to action on Friday, March 3 when they host NYU in the team's home opener at Preston Field. First pitch in the four-game series is scheduled for 3 p.m.
