WESTMINSTER, Md. - NYU held the McDaniel College baseball team in check over the first two games of a four-game series, using timely offense to earn a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
NYU 3, McDaniel 1
Senior
Ryan Martino held the Violet offense to just one run through four innings as he faced 22 batters and recorded six strikeouts, but the Green Terror offense was unable to provide a much needed spark.
Leading by one, NYU loaded the bases in the top of the fifth when Nick Argenziano stepped up to the plate and connected on a single up the middle to score two runs and put the Violets in front, 3-0.
The Green Terror (2-4) answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Junior
Tyler Yohn drew a walk, then stole second on a failed pick off attempt. Freshman
Ben Davis singled through the right side of the infield to advance Yohn to third before taking off for second, forcing a throw that allowed Yohn to score.
Sophomore
Matt Speakman relieved Martino in the sixth and held the Violets scoreless over the final two innings.
Senior
Hunter Kelly, who finished with two hits in the game, led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to left center, but was stranded as Ansel Balmer retired the next three batters in order to earn his first save of the season.
NYU 8, McDaniel 6
NYU (4-0) scored two quick runs in the top of the first before McDaniel answered with two of its own in the bottom half. Davis singled through the right side and advanced to second on a single from junior
Jake Smith. Senior
Austin Goudeaux scored Davis and moved Smith to third with a single to right center.
With runners at the corners and two outs, Goudeaux stole second which allowed Smith to scored on the throw and tie the game at 2-2.
The Violets scored two more runs in the third to retake the lead, but McDaniel came right back with an RBI-double from Yohn that scored Kelly.
In the fourth, the Green Terror tied the game for a second time on an RBI-single from freshman
Todd Calhoun that scored senior
Joey Hubinger.
With the score tied at 5-5, NYU retook the lead for good with three runs in the top of the eighth on an RBI-single from Connor Roggero and two-run double by Harrison Blueweiss.
The Green Terror and Violets conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
