BRIDGEWATER, Va. - McDaniel College baseball freshman
Ben Davis and junior
Jake Smith combined for nine RBIs as the Green Terror opened the season with a non-conference sweep at Bridgewater (Va.) Saturday.
McDaniel (2-0) took the first game 13-11 and followed that up with an 8-6 victory in game two.
Game 1: McDaniel 13, Bridgewater 11
McDaniel got on the board in the first inning. Lead off batter
Shane Daly doubled to left field, then advanced to third on a throwing error. Davis stepped up and drove him in for his first collegiate RBI. Bridgewater responded in the bottom of the first inning scoring three runs. After an RBI single from
Joey Hubinger, the Green Terror regained the lead 6-3.
Ryan Kelly started the game for McDaniel. He and senior
Ryan Martino combined for seven strikeouts to keep pace with Bridgewater. In the fifth inning, freshman
Todd Calhoun stepped up to the plate with the score tied at six. With shortstop
Tyler Yohn on first, Calhoun waited for his pitch and connected for his first career homerun and put McDaniel up by two.
The Eagles offense rallied once again and tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning. After a scoreless sixth inning, Davis came up looking for his second hit of the game. After a pair of walks and a single from fellow freshman Calhoun, the bases were loaded for Davis who took advantage with his first career grand slam.
With McDaniel leading by five heading into the bottom of the seventh,
Ryan Gibbons stepped to the mound. He was able to hold the Eagles offense in check for the final three innings and record his first save of the season.
Game 2: McDaniel 8, Bridgewater 6
The second game of the double header began much the same way as the first. Davis drove in a run to McDaniel up in the top half of the first inning. Bridgewater (0-3) responded with three runs in the first.
In the second inning, Calhoun went yard for his second homer of the day and his collegiate career. Yohn followed that with an RBI to tie the game back up at three. Freshman
Tyson Nercessian made his first career start on the mound for McDaniel and went three innings with three strikeouts. Three more pitchers were used for the Green Terror. Heading into the seventh inning Bridgewater had built a two-run lead.
Senior
Austin Goudeaux drew a walk to lead off the inning. Hubinger singled to left field and advanced Goudeaux to second with Smith coming up next. Smith stepped to the box and laced a double into the gap scoring both runners to tie the game at 6-6.
Goudeaux came up clutch in the eighth with an RBI single scoring
Connor Uhrig to give McDaniel the 7-6 lead. Freshman
Brady Goyne advanced to third on the single, then scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead heading into the ninth.
Gannon Williams came out of the bullpen in the eighth inning for his first collegiate appearance. The first batter he faced doubled to right field. After a walk to put two runners on, Williams struck out the next batter and putout the following two Eagles Hitters to get out of the jam. He held the talented Eagles offense scoreless over the last two innings and earned his first career save.
McDaniel returns to action against Montclair State at the Ripken Experience in Aberdeen, Md. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
