WINCHESTER, Va. - Freshman Sophia Leone and junior Zelda Hirsch led the McDaniel College women's track & field team in its indoor season-opener at the Holiday Kickoff Open hosted by Shenandoah University Sunday.
The Green Terror finished fourth out of seven teams with 68 points, just one behind third-place Eastern Mennonite. Centennial Conference rival Dickinson won the meet with 149 points, 30 more than second-place Shenandoah.
Leone won the pole vault with a jump of 2.75 meters while Hirsch tied that mark to place second. Their mark is the second-best in program history.
In weight throw, sophomore Ameerah Johnson finished seventh with a toss of 10.58 meters, the second farthest in program history. She also placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 10.41 meters to rank sixth in program history.
Senior Angel Bidgell placed second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.34 seconds, sixth in the long jump with a leap of 4.58 meters and sixth in the 200 metersi n 27.89 seconds.
Senior Katie Morgan placed third in the 400 meters in 1:02.29 while placing fifth in the 200 meters in 27.74 seconds. Sophomore Anna Rando placed 10th in the 200 in 28.58 seconds and ninth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.72 seconds.
Graduate student Bailey Mullen placed fifth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 11:05.16.
Sophomore Piper Nagaraj, freshman Maya Colavito, sophomore Anna Kale, and freshman Kaitlyn Bard won the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 11:45.26 while Morgan, Rando, Bidgell, and Nagaraj came in second in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:24.53.
Sophomore Abby Warner placed eighth in the mile, running a time of 7:18.94.
McDaniel does not compete again until the new year when the team returns to Shenandoah for the Kaye & JJ Smith Invitational on Jan. 14.
