GRANTHAM, Pa. - Led by an individual title and three runner-up finishes, the McDaniel College wrestling team finished second at the Messiah Invitational Saturday inside Hitchcock Arena.
The Green Terror posted their best-ever finish at the event which they have been attending every year for the last 14 seasons. The team totaled 119.5 points, second only to the host Falcons who had 133.0.
Sophomore
Thomas Monn, who became the first freshman in team history to secure All-America honors with. 36-3 record a year ago, posted a 4-0 record en route to winning the 149-pound title. He won his second-straight Messiah Invitational title after going 3-0 last season.
Monn totaled two major decisions, one fall and a 5-1 decision in the title match.
Sophomore
Ryan Athey (141), junior
Xavier Howard (157) and junior
Val Pryor (184) all earned runner-up finishes with three wins in four matches. Athey had two falls and 7-4 decision before falling to Messiah's Asa Brunk in the finals. Howard posted a tech fall, major decision and sudden victory win over Liberty's Reid Stewart before he was edged by Thade Radosa of Cornerstone in the final, 4-0.
Pryor won a major decision and two closely contested matches before he was edged by conference rival Max Borton of Ursinus in the final, 5-4.
McDaniel also had three wrestlers earn runner-up honors in the consolation bracket. Sophomore
Ryan Ohler advanced to the championship quarterfinals at 157 pounds before losing to Howard by major decision, 12-2. However, he would rebound with a major decision over Fritz Maurath of Johns Hopkins before earning a win by injury against Ursinus' Max Parnis.
After a 10-9 decision over Messiah's Clay Gainer, he was edged by Stewart from Liberty in the consolation final, 3-0.
Despite dropping his first match at 165 pounds, sophomore
Max Bentley ran off four-straight wins, including a win by tech fall over freshman Michael Binder before he was edged by Jake Hoffman of Johns Hopkins in the consolation final, 10-8.
Sophomore
Avery Cummings opened with an 8-6 decision against Kadin Khalloufi from Johns Hopkins before three consecutive wins in the consolation bracket, including a fall against freshman Gannon Brooks put him in the final. He lost by tech fall to Messiah's Austin Brass.
Senior
Yoann Olympio finished fifth at 184 pounds, posting two high-scoring decisions in the consolation bracket before edging Messiah's Chris Cratsley in the fifth-place match, 7-5.
Other notable finishes included sophomore
Romeo Tsai and senior
Alex DuFour who advanced to the consolation semifinals at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively.
McDaniel returns to action next Saturday, Nov. 11 at the W&J Invitational hosted by Washington & Jefferson beginning at 9 a.m.
