THE SKINNY
Ursinus led for the entire second half but needed to stave off a late McDaniel rally to escape with an 84-79 home win.
THE LEADERS
• Carter Truby (Sykesville, Md./Century) led the Green Terror with 18 points – one of four players to reach double figures.
• Kaelen Kanealey (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) finished a rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
• David Smoot III (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College) chipped in 13 points, six rebounds, and three blocked shots.
• Josh Sproul (Princess Anne, Md./Washington Academy) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.
FOR THE FOES
• Ryan Hughes led the Bears with 22 points and 11 rebounds. He also had five assists.
• Sean Neylon also netted 22 points.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• A Kaelen Kanealey jumper and Carter Truby 3-pointer staked McDaniel to a 5-0 lead in the first 42 seconds. A David Smoot layup stretched the lead to 18-10 with 14:28 showing in the first half. Ursinus closed the deficit to 22-19 on a Kyle Maurer 3-pointer but the Green Terror responded with an 8-2 burst to push the lead to 30-21 on a Kevin Salley (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla./South Plantation) three-point play with 9:21 remaining in the first half. Triples from Maurer and Sean Neyton, however, ignited a 10-0 run that put the hosts in front for the first time with 5:54 on the clock. The Bears pushed the lead as large as five en route to a 40-37 halftime lead.
• Hughes scored 10 points in the first 4:25 of the second half to help Ursinus stretch the lead to 57-50. The Bear advantage swelled as large as 69-61 midway through the half before McDaniel trimmed the deficit to 73-70 on a Josh Arruda (Morrisville, Pa./Pennsbury) triple. The Green Terror twice closed to within two before Trevor Wall hit two of his four free-throw attempts, opening up an 81-77 lead with 1:38 showing. A Dragon Hornatko (Baltimore, Md./Glenelg Country Day School) driving layup with 38.6 seconds remaining closed the margin to two. Neyton, however, canned a 15-foot fadeaway with 14.9 seconds on the clock to push the lead back to four. McDaniel missed a 3-point attempt at the other end before Hughes drained the first of two free throws to set the final margin.
THE INSIDE STORY
• McDaniel finished with a 41-33 advantage in rebounding.
• Mike Wallace (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum School) chipped in seven points and four assists.
• Dragan Hornatko and Josh Arruda added eight points each.
