FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Maddy Simmons (Bowie, Md./Bowie) won three matches in the consolation bracket to lead McDaniel at the ITA Southeast Regional tournament hosted by Mary Washington in women's tennis action on Saturday and Sunday.
Simmons dropped a 6-3, 7-6 match to Christopher Newport's Emily Morgan in the opening round of the Blue 2 Singles draw. In the consolation bracket, Simmons topped St. Mary's Claire Bodine 8-3 and Averett's Eleanor Crane 8-0 to advance to the consolation final, where she won by default.
In the Blue 3 Singles draw, Lindsay Russell (Leonia, N.J./Leonia) dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Grove City's Janine Jones in the opening round. In the consolation bracket, Russell topped Stevenson's Kelsi Mentzer 8-6 before falling to Lynchburg's Sarah Wyly, 8-0.
Laura Penhallegon (Glen Arm, Md./Loch Raven) and Brenna Gutshall (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove Area) both competed in the Blue 4 Singles draw. Both dropped their opening rounds before Penhallegon won her consolation quarterfinal match by injury withdraw.
Simmons and Russell teamed in the Blue 2 Doubles draw, winning their opening match over Wyly Ranita Coon, 8-6. In the quarterfinals, Colette Gilbert and Kristi Wong (Christopher Newport) topped Simmons and Russell, 8-3.
Gutshall and Penhallegon dropped a pair of matches in the Blue 3 Doubles draw.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Rutgers-Camden on Saturday. Match time is 1 p.m.
