BRANDYWINE, Pa. - McDaniel won both contested doubles matches en route to a 5-4 victory over Penn State-Brandywine in non-conference women's tennis action on Thursday.
Maddy Simmons (Bowie, Md./Bowie) led the Green Terror (1-0) with a pair of victories, not dropping a game.
Katie Corey led the Lions (0-1) with a straight-set win at third singles, winning 6-4, 6-4.
Simmons teamed with Winsome Schauer (Hartford, Conn./Watkinson School) for an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Simmons then won 6-0, 6-0 at first singles while Schauer took a 6-0, 6-1 win at second singles.
Leesa Malczewski (Denton, Md./Chesapeake) and Lindsay Russell (Leonia, N.J./Leonia) partnered to win second doubles by an 8-5 margin to make it a 2-1 match entering singles.
Brenna Gottshall (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) captured the victory with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles.
Russell and Steph Bryan played a three-set match at fourth singles. Bryan needed a tiebreaker to win the first set 7-6 before Russell forced a third set with a 6-4 victory. Bryan prevailed in the supertiebreaker, 10-5.
McDaniel returns to action against Cornell College in the opening match in Orlando, Fla., on Sunday. Match time is 10 a.m.
