CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Ryan O'Boyle (North Reading, Mass./Central Catholic) went 3-2 to finish fourth at 133 at the NCAA Div. III wrestling championship, leading McDaniel at the U.S. Cellular Center on Friday and Saturday.
By virtue of his two wins on Friday, O'Boyle moved into the semifinals and into Saturday's action. The third-seed assured himself of his second All-America honor once he stepped on the mat on the second day.
O'Boyle, who earlier in the day was named a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, opened his day with a 2-minute, 37-second fall over Cornell's Phillip Opelt.
In the quarterfinals on Friday night, O'Boyle pinned the sixth-seed Bryan Isreal (Ithaca) in 1:46 to advance to the semifinals. The seeds held in the bracket and O'Boyle has a rematch with Nathan Pike (NYU), who he defeated two weeks ago for the East regional championship.
On Saturday, Pike avenged that loss with a 7-5 win to drop O'Boyle to the third-place bout.
O'Boyle once again met up with Opelt in the consolation semifinals, winning by fall in 1:42.
Dustin Weinmann (Wis.-La Crosse) edged O'Boyle 10-6 in the third-place match, relegated the senior to a fourth-place showing.
With his three pins totaling 6-minute, 5-seconds, O'Boyle took home the NWCA award for most pins in the least amount of time at the championship.
Alvontae Drummond (Lincoln, Del./Milford) joined O'Boyle at the championship but dropped both of his matches.
Drummond's day started against the No. 3 seed Nathaniel Behnke (Wis.-Eau Claire), who notched a 5-1 decision to send Drummond to the consolation bracket at 141. There, he drew York's (Pa.) Greg Warner. Warner prevailed by technical fall 19-4 late in the third period.
